This part is particular to the 3.8 , which has a different trumpet / funnel into the airbox due to the additional ducting at the base which is then connected to the pressure accumulator #17 pictured .
The purpose of this accumulator is two fold , in that it increases the force under which the air is pushed into the airbox and also reduces the intake noise .
Very few 3.8 M5s have this part in place nowadays !
