Yet another one of those... input shaft tranmission gearbox flywheel rattle thread! (calling gearbox specialists)

Hey everyone,

I am so close to getting my car sorted out. I even got the keyless entry / alarm fixed during my last visit to the dealer .

My clutch never felt right even after replacing the master, slave and hose combo.
My take is that it's either a defective or incorrect pressure plate in there so the gearbox needs to come out.
That will be done soon. Then I was thinking that since the tranny is out, I could have someone look at it.

My car has had an input shaft rattle which occurs in neutral with the clutch out.
If you lean the shift lever towards 4th and press gently against the gear, the rattle goes away (it's true for all gears but 4th requires the least amount of pressure).
If I let go of the clutch slowly, the rattle has less chance of happening.

I know it can be considered normal for those Getrag six-speed units but still it's loud enough for me to justify having someone look at it.
It sounds pretty much exactly how my old E36 M3 sounded when I switched to a lightweight flywheel .

Besides UUC's famous miracle fluid mix, does anyone know exactly what the cure is for this issue, if there's one, and how long will a rebuild last until the noise re-appears again?

Also, I realize that my car is somewhat special, what is your opinion on installing a 3.6 flywheel in there while I'm at it?
I really liked the performance gain in 1st and 2nd with the E36 M3, and the M5 could use all the help it can to improve off-the-line / in-town performance, since I already have the rattle... !

Re the 3.6 flywheel ......

I have just fitted the 3.6 flywheel and clutch to a 3.8 with 6 speed getrag ....... incredible !

Revs much quicker and pulls strongly through the gears .....not to mention , weighs approx 5 kg as opposed to the approx 14 kg of the stock 3.8 dual mass flywheel !

Hallo Ben ......things are great , thanks m8 .......crazy busy ......people love BMWs !

Yes , you can fit the 3.6 flywheel to your 5 speed 3.8 , although you will need to fit the 3.6 clutch and flywheel bolts also !

Well worth doing !
