Yorevol....I think many of us would be interested in knowing
the chain of events before the motor dropped a valve...

IE; was it at very high revs?
when was the last valve clearance check ?
how many miles on the motor ?
timing chain condition etc....

This would all be useful knowledge in keeping the rest of the cars on the road.

Best regards & good luck with the sale,

Alan .

It's certainly spurred me into action, will be getting the clearances checked next month or so.

Had my valve clearenances checked yesterday, all spot on middle of the allowable tolerances, mechanic was very surprised to report.

wasn't pleased with the so called oil that came out of the gearbox though, it was like engine oil (thin) and jet black, and actually smelled like used engine oil... anyway, 75w90 in now and boy does it make a difference, feels like a different gearbox!

also had my fuel filter changed and steering box adjusted, which has made a noticable difference to the precision / feel of the steering.

dropped valve X Valve clearance

I had a broken valve last year too. And I had a valve clearance check few months before. all in spec.
We are talking about valve clearance to the cams. not valve clearance to the pistons, right ?
How could a tigh or loose valve clearance to the camshafts cause a dropped or broken valve at the neck (my case) for instance ??

i can't imagine the piston hitting a valve if the clearance to the cams are not in spec. we are talking about less than half milimeter diference here , right ?

Valve guides are of particular importance .

As mentioned , valve clearances can be within tolerance and yet , worn valve guides / excessive movement can lead to failures !

this is what happened to mine valve broke at neck but camshaft also broke i suspect oil starvation as it broke at the back furthest away from oil pump.cant see how tappet check would have prevented this.boy does it make a mess. i could have bodged it back together and sold it on but i wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy

When you take the SLS apart, I will need the proportioning valve. I have a friend in the service in germany who takes his leave in austin, so it might be cheaper to mail it to him and he can just fly home with it next leave.

Also, my ac control panel (three wheels) the left retaining tab is broken and it won't stay in the dash. If yours does not have this issue, I would like it too. Do you have cruise control?

best,

geoff
