Cast wheels are made by a company called FPS. If your wheel are cast examples you'll see the FPS stamp on the back where the bolt holes are. It will be within an ellipse. The letters BMW will not be anywhere on that wheel.

Forged wheels will have a BMW offset # stamped on the back, e.g ET27, ET22.

But the FPS ones were sold by BMW? Or was this some aftermarket thing?

I have the ET-sign and BMW-text on my wheels, so I guess they are forged for sure then. This is also the case on all other M-system II wheels I have seen so far. Haven't check so many M-system I yet, maybe these were sold both as cast and forged.
Some wheel fan here said there might be a difference in the black paint on the centre part between the factory fitted M-sys I and II. Claiming the Sys I colour was a bit more greyish. Might this be true?
They share the same number for the main wheel, both the Sys I and II. Maybe they changed the colour a bit during production.

Not sure why BMW M Division offered the cast wheels as an option. But it wasn't aftermarket, your car came optioned w/ one or the other.

I've also seen metallic spoke finishes as well as more solid black finishes.

sure. I'm trying to piece together a 'perfect' set for my car. I'm needing at least 2 really nice turbines, and a couple of covers. Would still be interested in your lot for a couple hundred $

I have been searching for a set of M system wheels and just thought I would add this to this thread. I recently found a set of 5 forged, staggered wheels with both system I & II ( throwing star & turbine covers). They also came with a set of tires in almost new condition. They are in near mint condition. What is the going rate for a set like this?

As much as you can afford .......staggered rims with both sets of covers are a rare find .

If the tyres are decent , they must be worth $800 alone .
