What's your 0-60 ?

So yesterday my friend got his GTech Pro he picked up on Fleabay.

He wanted to see if my M5 could top his E46 330i ZHP time of 6.8ish.

I said, " You're kidding right ? " He's been in my car on mild pulls and doesn't think my car can do better.

That's whats deceiving about the tq curve of our cars. Almost like the E60 M5 in many ways.

Well all it took was 1 run to prove why its called The Beast

Considering I didn't even side-step the clutch I ran a 5.64 time.

Helps to have the 275's in the back as when the stock 245's were on, I'd smoke them all day on a hard launch.

This was from a full stop, bout 3300 rpm pre-load. 7200 rpm 1st gear shift. I hit 60 mph @ about a nick under 7K in 2nd gear.

And this was w/ him in the car ! All 210 lbs of his fat arse !

Anyone else have times ? Kinda wondering out loud.

I have no doubt that the fleabay calculator showed a 5.64 time so this is by no means a stab at your credibility. That said, I have a real hard time with that number being legitimate unless you have some real funky mods that you are not mentioning.

Actually, its probably faster than that if I went all out.

My motor is a full rebuild w/ some cleaning of this and that , but it does have 118K on it now.

It dyno'd recently at 265whp , which roughly equates to 333-335 using the 15-18% DT loss formula. A little bit more power now since I got a valve adjustment after that dyno session.

I took my car to the weighing platform at Lebanon Valley Raceway here in NY and it's 3685lbs w/ 5 gal of gas in the tank, no spare tire , jack, and tools. Thats how I run the car most of the time. Just a few cans of Fix a Flat in the trunk.

If you go to 0-60 mph Calculator - 060calculator.com, their rather basic calculator actually puts me at 5.1 secs for 0-60 for a 3700lb RWD car w/ 335 at the crank.

I have a JC chip and thats it.

Its easy for me to duplicate the run, I'll try to get a video posted of it.

Hello,

Just a quick note as I should be working

I have run 275 rear tyres before and they do offer a huge amount of grip.

My car is too old and too fragile to drag-race off the line, but when I did some extensive testing a year or so back I noticed that violent acceleration down sliproads, off roundabouts and overtakes from a slow start speeds resulted in far less traction loss compared to the 235, 255 section tyres I've also used.

Where the 255 might spin up early or when off-camber or generally squirm about, the 275 were solid.
235 would just spin in the same situations.

It was huge fun. I only mention it as I believe that in the right conditions tarmac-wise, you may well be able to get a tad more power down off the start-line in a G-Tech or V-Box testing session.

However...
after working my way from 255 through 265 and then to 275 profile tyres over a two year period, I then put my spare set on which is a non-staggered setup, running factory 235/40/17.
I found that whilst I had less ultimate grip in some circumstances, the breakaway when it came was far more progressive and the car was far better balanced.
The 265/275 could snap, especially in the wet, where the 235 in the dry and wet were a pleasure to play around with. I felt a better and more confident driver on the limit.
Given my limited talent behind the wheel, I feel around most tracks rather than on-road, I would be faster with 235 all round. YMMV.

I am now torn between my sets of wheels; 275 for show and outrageous dry grip but horrendous understeer, or boring looking undersized-for-the-arches 235 tyres but a dream of car when on the ragged edge or going sideways. Decisions!

Kind Regards

Ivan

P.S. Glad such a rebuild engine is doing so well! Props to the mechanics!

245 all around in here, used 275 in the back too for a while... there is no grip in the word that compensates the huge understeer.....

I got a 5.9 0 to 60 in the dry (Racelogics box) just squeezing the clutch out and flooring it. Plenty of spin and after the second run the lovely expensive fragrence of essence of clutch plate. I'm running 235 in front and 255 in back with a 20mm rear ARB and following a rear end rebuild by the Fazzmeister the understeer that ate my front tyres at the Ring is a thing of the past although wet days make the rear looser (but still controllable) than previously using an 18 mm rear ARB.

More like the G-Tech's accuracy is not very good (or more "accurately" - there are several variables that an accelerometer based device cannot account for - like the grade of the road, bumps, dips, etc). The trouble with these devices is factoring out the acceleration due to gravity. I can show you how to get 2000Hp out of your M5 without even turning on the key just by tiling the unit backwards... 1.0G's of acceleration right up to 300Mph!

The only measure of performance that can be used to accurately compare one car to another is to go to the strip or track, line-em-up and check the time slips.....
