Ok... After some thinking and a few phone calls I decided to open her up this weekend to see what the damage is. Hopefully it's not to bad.

You european guys have no idea how lucky you are with all the parts, shops and fellow m5 owners youve got there. The guy at BMW I phoned didn't even have the faintest idea of the car when I phone him yesterday. When finally we got past that I found out almost every single part on that car needs to be imported from Germany because BMW SA don't stock them.

So no help from the dealer then.... But got a few good workshops around here so got availability on everything that could possibly have gone wrong, and if they don't have it they make it....

Will post a few pics of what ever I find this weekend.

BTW never mentioned it but awesome forum. It is really helpfull.

Best of luck Bertie .

You may find that the damage is not as bad as first suspected , upon inspection .

There are a few SA members on here , so hopefully they will offer some country specific advice ?!

Ah damn...

Started stripping the motor this weekend...

Removed the Cam cover and almost started crying. Whoever worked on the car previously needs to be hanged. There are pieces of the top part of the head cut out to get acces to bolts because the idiot didn't take the time to remove the cover at the back. Some of the bolts I almost broke a powerbar on and some of the others I removed with my hand. There is grinding maorks on the camshaft. And one of the head bolts has been stripped.

BTW any ideas on how to safely remove the stripped bolt? Was an allencap now its just a round hole...

I have never seen anything like this being done to such a great car....

Dang. That sure is a bad run of luck. Hopefully you wont be too bad off after. The repairs. Heres to hoping everthing works out. These are old cars and im bout to open my '91 myself. They need the love. As other members have said, you will NOT regret it after you take it up over 5k! Best of luck to you.

This is taking longer then expected. If its not the weather i'm working.
Hopefully by next week i'll have the head off.

Does anyone know if any of the other e34 engines will fit on the Getrag 280 box? Thought of maybe fitting another engine while working on the S38B36 because I can pick up most of the non-M5 models for under R20000 here, thats about USD2200.

sounds liek we have the same spec of car.

mine's a 1991 Rosslyn SA kit build as well, was brought to England in 92.

not surprised the BMW SA guys didn't know anything about your car, BMW Uk, BMW germany and M division and BMW SA can't find any build spec for my car ethier, just that it was built.

sorry to hear about the rubbish workmanship thats happened to your engine previously.

there is at least 1 other SA based E34 M5 owner on this forum BTW. his car is white as well, beginning to wonder if all SA E34 M5's where the same colour and spec'

pics of my car here http://gallery.bmw5.co.uk/main.php/v/1day/M5/

I opened the motor this weekend.
Damn....

One piston has burnt through. 1 has a slight bit of damage. the head got some serious work that needs to be done. 3 or 4 of the pistons had broken rings. About halve the valves are shot.

I think for now I'm done with the M5.
