MOS2 in getrag 280

I've got the gear whine and it's really annoying. Trans shifts fine unless downshifting into 2nd at speed, which requires double clutch and rev match, no biggie. Never pops out of gear or grinds on shifts, but whines like hell. I've changed the fluid with Redline D4 and it's full, still whines. Is there any reason not to use some kind of moly gear additive to help reduce the noise level a bit?

i've heard/red redline mtl or mt 90 works better for this gearbox as it ages. Think the source of that may have been the roundel tech section. Much thicker stuff than the d4.

It probably won't help with the noise, but there are a couple of guys on the Yahoo E34M5 group who swear by adding a couple of teaspoons of MoS2 powder to their ATF as a way to prolong synchro life...

Changed out the gear oil today with some MTL...figure I'll go thicker in small steps. First impressions are good...still whiney, but I can now down shift into second above 20mph w/o double clutching. I've been working it up slowly, and thus far have made it to 33mph while rev matching. It feels like higher speeds are possible, but I'm gonna feel my way there slowly. I'll be very happy if I make it to 40mph with no grinds.

Surely it's a question of revs rather that actual speed?

By double clutching or changing into second very slowly, you are allowing parts of the gearbox to slow down, hence alieviating the syncromesh of it's usual job. This can happen at 30km/h or 160 km/h (just don't shift into second), it's simply a questions of rotation.

I had the exact same issue with my M5 last year. The consensus of the board at the time was a rebuild, rather than wasting money on various oils with various viscosities. As when issues like these rear their ugly heads it's only a question of time. Wise advice that I followed. I rebuilt my box for about €1000 and have had no issues since.

And plus, not being able to shift quickly into second makes roundabouts extremely boring

I'm gonna hold off on the rebuild for a bit. A week or so on, the MTL has helped quite a lot. The trans still whines, but it shifts much better now. Down shifting into 2nd is much easier. I know that a new or rebuilt box would be even better, but the wife says not now. Apparently a complete suspension and steering overhaul including a Dinan kit and new SLS struts along with a new exhaust, intake, complete ignition system replacement, complete brake system overhaul, Dinan chip and cam gears w/ valve adjustment, refurbing the M systems w/ new tires, new clutch, etc etc. in the last 6 months cost a bit more than she realized. We need to let the accounts grow again. If the trans goes completely then a new box will be a necessity and will be done, but a rebuild to stop a whine and let me get sideways more easily in a roundabout isn't right now.
