It's a classic policy with 5000 miles PA anmd includes my wife - although the accumulation of bumps and scratches on her car over the years make's that option unlikely, so could be looking at under £300. They offer an agreed value on the policy for an extra £12 or something, best of all no nippy call centre numpties at the other end of the phone. Excess is £250 b.t.w.

Cheers.
Hi Phil,

Always good to hear from you mate! Thanks very much for this pointer. How have you found them as regards valuation? What did they ask for as evidence etc and if they quibbled your estimate did they offer a fair compromise?

Sorry for all the questions but these are the issues I'm having at present.

Your renewal price seems pretty good too which looks promising and like you I'd be on no more than a 5,000 mile p.a. deal. I'll not add the wife this time round as she is terrified of driving it anyway so that might help too ;-)

Look forward to hearing from you,

Duncan

In typical fashion I never completed the agreed valuation form. However, iirc, it simply asked for an opinion on the condition of the vehicle - which I could of done myself, along with photo's and any other evidence to support your value. So I guess that a load of parts invoices, decent photo's and copies of a couple of classified ad's would do the trick. Had I completed the form I'd of probably gone for 7 - 8k value as there was a couple of similar models advertised at that level. A good clean early 3.8 should be kicking off from 4 - 5k plus a decent addition for works and parts spend in the last 12 months, imho.

insurance is a nightmare. If your car goes walkabout how can it be replaced with an equivilant vehicle. Our cars are becoming irriplaceable due to the lack of quality vehicles up for sale. Someonetell me how I will get another brilliant red one as there are only two in britain still alive out of three that were made. do they assume that a avus blue , sebring grey etc are a replacement when I specifically chose a brilliant red one due to my requirement of owning a quality rare one. Mine is also one of the first twelve demonstators used by bmw to promote the new 3.8 again how can I replace that.

Good points there Andy and difficult to get anyone other than a specialist insurer to understand I would imagine. I guess for the most part we would have to settle for being able to buy another 'good' example and have enough left to get it up to a high enough standard (if not quite the same). My car is also one of the very early 3.8's although not in such a rare colour as yours but still very cherished

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say that the insurers came back to me
with £6500 GBP agreed value.

Thats for a 2 owner sub 100k 3.8 5-speed with original paint.

Regards,

Alan.

Are you going to push for a higher value Alan , as that sounds a touch low ?!

Hmm....Hadn't really thought that far David,

I guess it's in the right ball park....any lower and I would've
kicked up a stink.

I don't intend on using the insurance but at least I know I'll
not get £1500 !!!

Regards,

Al.

Thanks for your update Alan - I'm still waiting to see what figure I get.

By the sounds of things I am inclined to agree with David that £6,500 is on the low side for your particular car - I'd push for another thousand anyway!

As for getting buttons, at least thanks to the government we are all now able to take advantage of the £2,000 trade-in system!
