Check this out. Incredible story that is making national media in Canada. Not an M story but a story that everyone will find of interest who loves cars and frequents car forums.
It really is unbelievable. LukeM5 is correct, the story starts to unfold at page 8 but you really have to follow it from the start and keep with it (at least to page 8). I was sucked in and read it start to finish.
The matter is now with the police. The car community is putting a lot of pressure on the police to charge the fellow. It will come down to a question of evidence.
What amazes me is how the story unfolds and the amount of research that the car community (through a number of different car forums) was able to generate on the fellow in a relatively short time frame. Ultimately, it is the car community that builds the legal/case brief that will be handed over to the police/crown attorney. The fellow (if he is innocent) certainly didn't do himself any favors in the process and it would seem that he is already known to police.
We need to be mindful of how much information we put out there or risk that a potential thief might be lurking.
I can't help but wonder if I've ever met his sister ...
Yes I have always believed that you should mask the number plate and also protect your identity while in these open forums.
Although users may indeed respect each other, although that was not the case in this situation, this is an open forum and as such it allows anyone to have a look and investigate possible there possible future "victims".
Even the creation of an ID will not constrain the dishonest from taking advantage of other forum members.
Well , I , for one , am an advocate of openess and honesty .
It was that forum's community spirit and sense of mutual cause that led to that thief being identified .
The fact that we all attempt to meet up and share a part of the tangible us , rather than simply sit typing cyberspace nonsense into our keyboards has resulted in this being one of the only forums that I frequent .
Try as you might to keep yourself to yourself and your business a secret nowadays , there is a wealth of information about all of us in the public domain .
Rather than sit quietly at home , a paranoid secret squirrel character , I would prefer to live my life open and true , upsetting as few people as possible along the way .
If someone has a decent enough reason to come looking for you , there's a good chance that they'll find you , no matter how covert your operations are .
Man can only be comfortable with his own approval !
