MAF or Not....?

Hey,. I bought my first M5 about 2 week ago, a 1992 model with 193000km on the clock.

Got a question.

The airflow meter on the car gave in so the guy I bought it from fitted an stand alone management system because it costs less than half the price BMW ask for n new AFM, witch has to be imported from Germany.

I would like to restore the car back to stock but I'm not sure its worth the money.

Any ideas? Anybody here fitted a management system to their E34?

From my limited knowledge a standalone management system costing less than half a MAF is probably of marginal capability.

I ran a kit car with a modest standalone management system on an 8000 rpm Toyota motor. It was fine on WOT, but it couldn't adapt to weather/temperatures and it didn't idle well, nor was it as fuel efficient as it should have been, in spite of the map being professionally supplied.

I agree any ECU that cost less than the MAF is most likely not going to be the best thing but it all depends on the setup, can you give us any specifics on it?

The ECU is a Dictator. Its cheap and to be honest kinda shitty.
The FAM cost about R16000 here, Thats about $2000.

For that price I can fit something like a Haltech or Motec...

So stock or new ECU its gonna cost me.

Did the PO give you the bad MAF with the car? If so, send it to Injection Labs in Colorado and have it rebuilt for a couple hundred USD. If not, find a core MAF and send it in. Then return to Motronic.

Well then I would say either upgrade to a Motec, Pectel (What Im going with), or go back to OEM with the MAF depending on what your goals are with the car.

agreed...I figured that Motec et al would be a bit pricey since 2k for the MAF seemed to be out of the question. If you're doing a full race high comp stroker or FI of any sort that would be the way to go. Stay mild and go back to motronic.

Think I'm going to get a new MAF sometime. Managed to tune the ECU so that everything runs fine except the car dont start after I've drivin it. Have to wait like 20 or 30 mins before it starts again.

And I removed the spark plugs this weekend and the previous owner, or idiot rather, put in the wrong plugs. Like not even the right heat range.

Everybody here going with the Bosch Y6DC plugs?
