Hum, where to start.

There are no kits or tunes easily available for turboing the M5 and everything Ive seen and researched is custom. With it being custom unless you can build the majority of the parts yourself its going to cost quite a bit. The next thing is 600hp-700hp is a huge amount of power and you start getting into reliability and driveability concerns with almost everything in the car. So to get a better idea lets analyze the transmission as just one little part of this whole build.

First off the clutch as its the most obvious, you will need a new clutch due to your power requirement and with that your going to have driveability trade offs due to having to use a more harsh friction material, ok you can live with that. But with that harsher friction material you're eliminating some of the give that the OEM material has and with it inducing more abuse to the transmission. A way around all of that is to convert to a twin disc carbon carbon flywheel/clutch setup that SACHS or Tilton will gladly build for you, it is costly (~$5k)but the reduction in weight and moment of inertia along with the additional load capacity is worth it in my opinion (Thats why Im working out the specifics and getting one). After the clutch you have the manual transmission fluid that cools and lubricates the transmission, with 600-700hp its going to be worked even harder and with that more heat which will move the fluid away from its optimum operating temp. You can alleviate some of this by switching fluids and installing an auxiliary oil cooler (The E92 M3 uses a bolt on transmission fluid pump, could possibly use this with a custom cooler). Lastly the transmission itself may not hold up under that much power, M5s and older Aston Martins (DB7 I believe) eat the G280s up with less than 400lbft of torque so with the torque and power you'll be generating I wouldn't hold out much hope for it. A solution to this is try and use the Getrag D 6 Speed transmission that can be found in later 3.8 cars.

So to fix the above issues you are looking at a pretty sizable chunk of money to just make sure the transmission itself can take the power and last, so you can imagine the work the engine would take along with the rest of the driveline and even body work. I would reconsider your power requirements otherwise your cost is going to go up exponentially as you can see. I'm not trying to dissuade you from turboing the M5 (I'm actually working on getting all my parts together and built for my own build) just understand that to double the cars power and keep the same reliability is going to cost a lot of money and there will be trade offs. Personally I am shooting for a little less than 600hp and lots of reliability (ie lifespan), but its costing me quite a bit a good example is the $1,000 just for the Addel Wiggins fittings for my charge piping. But at the end of the day and the bottom of my checking account I will hopefully have a nice reliable twin turbo M5. Good luck with your build!

Try a search. From memory there is a guy in New Mexico looking to turbo an M5 (very good looking project), there was a guy named Paul who built one, and there is the outrageous Norwegian (? VS Racing) which developed 1000 bhp and used (so I've been told) a virtually standard 5 spd 3.8 Getrag box.

There is also the infamous Turkish mechanic with a unique way of interpreting his dyno figures who is now apparantly in the Turkish army (under the tutelage of Staff Sgt Ali Al Bilko)but whose posts were in great source of amusement for many.

Best of luck.

Ok now to think of it 700hp is a little 2 much, I'm looking to get reliable power and I don't want to be at the shop all the time..
I know I'm going to build my engine, what do u guys think is reliable power?

There is a twin turbo build at the moment that looks the goods, look for lonewolf's post, should be on the road soon.

How much are you looking to spend, $15k, $30k, $40k?

There is always that one on youtube, dejvan's burgandy 535 with breyton magic's and a s38b36 (i think) big turbo pumping out the numbers, lots of custom work done to beef up the driveshafts etc, you can download the photos from various posts on the net if they still exist.

With my build I'm aiming for around 550hp-600hp but I'm building the engine to take up to 1.5bar (~21psi) when I will only be running hopefully around 1bar to meet my goals (according to a few of the swedes Ive talked to who have turboed the S38 I should be good).

I seriously doubt though that I will drive the car around at full power at all times and thankfully with my ECU (Pectel SQ6) it has some pretty impressive variable mapping/boost control as well as traction control and safety strategies that allow me to get the power to the ground as well as protect my engine as climatic and operating conditions change (ambient temp, barometric pressure, and coolant and oil temp etc). Ive got a pretty detailed build Ive been working on getting together and in my opinion the hardware side is relatively easy compared to the control side (ECU, monitoring etc) which is the more challenging but more rewarding part. With a good ECU there is so much you can do to make your setup more reliable its pretty amazing.

At the end of the day though its all going to come down to how much you want to spend and how elaborate you want to get with everything. So what are you wanting to do with the car is it a drag machine, street car, or track car? Knowing that will make it easier to give you some input.

Ok im willing to spend anywhere from 10 to 15 k, i already got a quote of how much the internal work is going to cost, to handel the power, and im just wondering how much would the kit the cost...
and do u think thats enough money to do all the work?>

injectors, fuel pump, all the "pipes" etc.... its more for 15k than for 10k for it all....
