Dinan Turbo S38

It could be a headache to put together a turbo system, but what I got is a complete setup with the exception of the intercooler, which was damaged in the accident, it already has the modified ECU, all the work is done someone payed over $20k for this setup. Willing to let it go for a good price.

I can't imagine the costs associated with a properly done S38 turbo...needless to say, the Dinan kit would be quite a chunk beyond the 15k upper limit mentioned by OP. I'd look into a good stand alone like MOTEC, 034, or Tec2. Many of the headaches that I encountered with the VW turbo conversion stemmed from attempting to modify the Motronic ECU to deal with boost. Don't waste your time on that...go standalone from the beginning and save your self the trouble. That said, attaining factory like tractability under all conditions will require a fortune in dyno tuning time. Plan to make the car safe and driveable under normal conditions, then program for full boost, and fill in the blanks as your bank accounts allow. This will be a long expensive process, but will be worth it when you're done. You could of course go the Dinan or VS motor route, but plan to triple your budget, at least...good luck and keep us posted.
Good input from prior experience!

RichardT, very nice find!

The deepest well of knowledge on boosted BMW's, is on the forced induction forum on BFC. I would reccomend a search rather than starting a thread as unfocused as this one. There is no kit, but there have been several efforts over the last ten years of my involvement with S/C and turbo BMW's. There is one successful supercharged E 34 M5 that I have found, and the Swede dragsters. I have high hopes for the twin turbo project by Lonewolf on this forum, but I suspect there are tuning issues. There is a rather infamous street car in Florida, Big Red, a turbo 535 that was making remarkable streetable power, and the owner started a S38 build, but it also faded away. All that I want is to boost the torque a bit, maybe 350+ at the wheels, hoping to gravy train any successful build and apply the lessons learned. Good luck with your build.

I noticed that as well, if you look closely you also notice the throttle bodies were stripped as well (actuators and most likely the plates) as the actuator for the resonance flap. I think I have another picture of a DINAN S38 its in a M6 though I'll compare them when I get home. Kinda sad that DINAN didn't keep any of the hardware that really makes the S38 special. RichardT do you know if this was done by DINAN or was modified by someone else afterwards?

I believe it was done by Dinan, but I have no way to prove it. I did not see any Dinan logos on the body of the car. The adapter on the intake for the single butterfly is a costume piece by Dinan because it has the Dinan logo on it. I'll layout all the peices and take some pictures of everything this weekend.

If you google Dinan turbo e34 m5 there are a few decent links buried in the crap. One is a page by Rob Levinson about a Dinan turbo E28 M5...it has working throttles, but obviously no resonance flap. I was unable to find anything on a Dinan turbo E34 M5, but a few accounts of turbo E28s. Seems that they make about 380whp, 420bhp, at about 7-12 lbs of boost. That's a lot of work and dollars for not as much gain as I'd expected. The torque figure is something else, but I'm not sure that I'd sacrifice the razor sharp throttle response for the added thrust. The more I look into the turbo thing for this car the more I think it's not worth it for me...if I was gonna use a power adder it would be either a supercharger placed where the airpump is, or NO2. Probably forged pistons and NO2 so I could get that thrust when I want and maintain stock feel and reliability the rest of the time. I like the idea of more displacement with a small shot of happy gas better, and could probably acheive it for about the same cost as a hacked together backyard turbo setup that would run like crap and blow up in a year.

According to Robs site his E28 M5 made 475hp (at the crank) Dinan M5 Turbo and according to this M6 DINAN setup 1988 BMW M6 - ICS Performance - Obsession - European Car Magazine they are making 406hp (at the wheels) at 10psi. So based on Robs and DINANs numbers and assuming a drivetrain loss of around 17% you get 394hp at the wheels and if you remember the E28 M5 and the E24 M6 were equipped in the U.S. with the S38B35 which made 256hp out of 3.453L your getting around a 220hp bump in power. So based on this and a few conversations with Andreas from PPF I see no reason why a properly built and tuned S38B36 shouldnt be able to make 500hp on ~7psi.

The only reasons I can think of why DINAN would eliminate the variable resonance setup and the throttles would be due to not being able to properly integrate a bypass system with the variable resonance plenum setup (I doubt this, I dont see any issues) or not being able to account and tune for the variable resonance system (Seperate control unit and parameters causing issues). But even that doesn't make sense because even if they couldn't account for the actions of the variable resonance system (I doubt it) then why delete the throttles? Anyways I look forward to the pics RichardT you definitely have a unique setup!

twin turbo

Hello,
I have a build going right now, search the thread. I can tell you it is painstaking work if you are going to do it right. The builder, Jon Firpach has been working on the car on and off (depending on his schedule) for about 8 months now and he is doing a fantastic job. Jim Rowe did the motor rebuild. We will have a whole lot of new pics and an update to the thread in the next few weeks.
