Well the worst has happened - my engine has blown.
A little rattle followed by a big rattle and then an engine thats totally locked up. Wont turn on the key - its definitely buggered.
Now, do I rebuild it or replace it with a re-manufactured short engine from BMW.
What a nightmare, I feel like crying.

Dan....terrible news. I would get some quotes for a rebuild. May NOT be as expensive as you imagine and Phil Crouch is now just 4 miles from your front door so you can walk there!!

However I do it its going to be very expensive. I'm looking into my options at the moment.
I'm not absolutley sure what has happened but as the engine is locked up solid I'm assuming something serious has happened in the bottom end of the engine. If the cylinder head is OK then maybe a rebuild will be the way to go but if the head is damaged the only sensible option is a repacement engine from BMW.
How about Ł8600+VAT!!!
I thought about calling it a day with the car for a while but I have just invested to much time and money in it to write it off - not to mention that I love the car and I'd just got it driving and looking the way I wanted it.

Take a bit of thinking time before making any decisions. I may have done a couple of things differently regarding my rebuild if I'd thought about it.
Just to add to your calculations, once I get my car back on the road I should have some spares you could possibley have:
Should have 6 possibly 11 good std 3.6 pistons, good crank, engine block which will need one cylinder fitted with a new liner (I believe one of our Dutch breteren had this done for about 500 euro). pluss other odds and ends.
Parts are located in Prague, so not sure about shipping costs, but there could be other options (I or friendsmay be able to deliver)
Anyway keep your chin up!

You wash your car like it was your firstborn child, you tend to its needs like it was your own body, you rotect it like it's your family, then you drive it like you stole it.
Sorry to hear of your misery, after all that work being carried out it is sad to hear she is off of the road again.
I would have a word with Davidoli, I am sure he has a suitable 3.6 lump spare sitting around somewhere.. you never know he may be able to sell you an entire donor car...
