Hi Dan,

That engine looks gorgeous. Knowing Faz his attention to detail, I am confident you will be very satisfied with teh final result.

I do have some questions/ remarks though.

1: Do you still have the old engine ? It does have a significant core charge.

2: You mention the oil pump as the most likely cause, but has that been investigated ? Oil pumps normally are rugged parts. They can loose efficiency by clogged oil-debrie residu. It is interesting to see some pictures of the internal parts of your old oil-pump.

3: I see that the new engine is not supplied with a new crankshaft hub. It is not that expensive and it is wise to replace it.

Hi Raymond.

We will be sending the old engine back to BMW, as you say the core charge is significant - around £2k.

We are suspecting oil pump failure as both the oil filter and canister were very dry, suggesting the oil was not being retuned to it. The engine oil had a lot of metal particles in it when the sump was drained. Also when the failure occurred I noticed the oil temperature rising sharply just before it seized. Interestingly The oil light didn't come on and there was no oil pressure warning on the check control. I don't know if a sensor was faulty. There are of course many other potential causes of the failure, I suspect we will only know for sure when the engine is opened.

I'm leaving Faz in charge of assessing the serviceability of the ancillary parts that will be re-used, I know the crank hub is of the later more reliable type. I don't want to put anything 'suspect' back on the car but I've already ordered around £500 worth of parts to be replaced and unfortunately I don't have unlimited resources for this job.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for being so candid. I've been following this thread closely as my engine also went pop a while ago.

Done a bit of agonising over the last 18 months, but I'm pretty certain the route you have taken would not be possible for me.

I'll post what my rebuild costs when it's finished.
But so far -
2000euro complete replacement engine, came with 1000e worth of new parts - timing cain etc, oil pump, head gasket, head studs, various other gaskets, nuts bolts, seals etc.
1600e - 6 new Mahle max size pistons and rebore(block was not as good as anticipated)
Costs to come - new bearing shells, dizzy cap rotor etc, vac hoses, valve and head work.

total labour will be about 3000 euro

ouch! with more to come.

Although I have already sold on one set of TBs - 350e and hopefully the extra crank, 11 std pistons & rods and maybe damaged block and head may recoup some of the outlay.

Nasty business this engine going pop pallava!

Ray - been following that thread closely too!

Dan - I feel the same about all that I've spent too. Multiples of what I paid for the car! And when i bought it I thought that if it started getting expensive I'd just get rid.....hah! I got the fever bad!

Well done Dan ! I think you've chosen a very admirable route.

If my engine were to go pop...funds permitting ( what else would permit ? !! ) I'd do the same.

The thought of a spanking new engine in one of these cars is pure bliss.

I'm still playing the lottery...if any winnings come my way I'll buy one to stare at until the evil date comes !

Well done...very well done !!

A very interesting thread indeed and I sympathise with the costs as at Christmas I had a full rebuild of my E30 M3 S14 2.3 with rebore and new pistons to be sure. Admittedly I did go down the optional tuning route as well with Schrick Cams, Carbon intake and plenum, Alpha N etc but the costs are comparitive to a degree and I reckon all up it was just over £10k and would have been £7k without the extra goodies.

The results however are fantastic and I'm enjoying every minute behind the wheel - just hide the invoice from the Wife or own up to 50% and still get a beating......

Cheers,

Dave.

Ah yes, my wife has figured out that whole 50% part of my past upgrades... so now I need to offset and carefully time the discussion to ensure the purchase goes through without too much reaction. Haha, adds to the fun.
