Dan ,

I am truly sorry to hear of your misfortune , but would have the engine inspected before stressing yourself any further .

It sounds like your chain may have jumped the sprocket based on your account of pre-failure events .......

I haven't got a spare engine at the moment unfortunately .

D

I would have a word with Davidoli, I am sure he has a suitable 3.6 lump spare sitting around somewhere.. you never know he may be able to sell you an entire donor car...
Hi Jon, I did consider a secondhand engine and if I didn't intend to keep the car for ever (which I will now have to do as I've sunk at least £15k into it) I'd have been on the phone to David by now.
I think that I'm going to have to take the rebuild/replacement route as I dont think I could take it possibly happening again with a worn engine.

Give Phil Crouch a shout on 0760 280953. Am sure he will give you a full understanding about what has happened and a costing before you decide what to do.

Thanks to everyone for you kind words and sympathy. I'm not going to make any hasty decisions and will look at all the options before taking the plunge. For the moment its going into my garage while I save up some cash.

I cant let this one die...

Ive been there too I feel your pain Dan
If its any consolation,if your head survived a rebuild is about half price of a new engine from BMW (are they still available?)assuming you do the work yourself.
I also have spare block and crank if of any use,I hope to never be needing them

Dan, labour on an engine rebuild is around £1600 plus VAT, parts depending upon damage / salvage can make the job vary in price from £3,000 to around £5,000. Get the car looked at and then decide upon a rebuild / salvage and begin the hunt for parts when you know exactly how bad the damage is...ie pistons, valves, timing chain / sprokets etc.

It may well be less serious than initially apparent.

Hi Dan

Very sorry to hear about this. I came close myself this winter when a little pin securing the upper guide for the cam chain popped out the front of the engine. The oil level was a litre below the bottom of the stick. It took a few more weeks off my life but has been salvaged. However, my conclusion was that with a healthy discount a replacement engine is not such bad value. Hope you come to the right decision in your own time.

Cheers, Anwar
