Hi Mike,

The distributor drive flange was bolted on 180 degrees out which flattened the locating dowel in the exhaust cam. Not really the sort of error you expect on an M engine. Parts 8 and 9 on the diagram.

BMW cooper in Colchester were fantastic though, they picked the car up from Farrells and sorted everything out. Their support was invaluable during the job and it shows that the dealer network can work very well alongside independants.

I believe the engine was built in '96. Only the block itself was re-used everything else is brand new. I'm not sure what the shelf life is on these engines.

Well I've been doing a few miles in the car now and I can safely say that I'm glad I spent the money. There have been times when I have seriously questioned my sanity over the past few months.

There is something about these cars that cannot be described, Its like driving along with the devil on your shoulder yelling "go on, boot it" all the time.
I love it.

They will never make cars like this again. We are lucky people to own such tremendous machines.

Dan,

glad you have finally got the car finished and back on the road...

I agree, having been driving mine the last few days, they really are lovely old things when running well.

look forward to seeing this clean engine in the flesh at a meet in the future..

Cheers,

Steve

Brilliant ending to the thread - a credit to your persistance and the invaluable help of Farrell and it seems, your local dealer - CONGRATULATIONS

Really happy for you Dan, hopefully your wallet can now rest and you can enjoy like the original new owners did, even though relatively expensive, it's still at a fraction of the new price of an E34 M5.

E34 M5 - your sanity restored :-)
