Hi David,

The engine is in and running but there have been a few unforeseen issues to deal with. There have been a few problems with electrical gremlins due to the engine harness being nearly 20 years old and not taking kindly to being moved around. There was also a small problem with the engine that resulted in a warranty claim and all the hassle that goes with that. I have to say that Cooper BMW in Colchester have been brilliant and have restored my faith in the dealer network. Everything is sorted now and there is just a new alarm system to fit and I can start getting some miles covered.

I was really hoping to make it to Gaydon but we just run out of time. I'm not going to have it run in by the 20th of September so I don't think I'll be doing any quarter mile runs at Santa Pod and unfortunately I'm working that weekend so can't make it to soak up the atmosphere.

I'll post up some pictures and maybe a sound clip (if I can work out how to do it) when I get the car back next week.

That's a shame Dan ........ best of luck with covering some miles soon .

I am looking forward to hearing your experiences of a brand new S38B36 and to seeing your car at some forthcoming meets !

Sorry to hear about the gremlins, have to say that the wiring in my car is extremely brittle in places, whenever I move cables to access something I try to warm them through or not bend them too much - which must be pretty much impossible to do when fitting a new engine.

Hope to read about the pleasure it's bringing you soon :-)

Well its back

The car is wonderful. I cannot describe how good it is to be back behind the wheel. After spending 4 months driving around in my 525 and 540 - both auto's, it's a breath of fresh air to be driving an M car and a proper manual again.

The new engine sounds great and the whole car feels like its been given a new lease of life. I am of course running it in now which is going to require plenty of self discipline before I can really let it rip

As with every job on the car I've tried to take a restoration approach rather than waiting for stuff to fail, so parts with any visible wear or reaching the end of there service life have also been replaced. Needless to say this is a very expensive way of doing things but the best way in the long term.

I can't thank Farrell enough for doing this job for me. The quality of everything he has done is truly outstanding, I cannot see how it could have been better when it left Garching. If you are in the UK and you want work of the highest standard, done by a totally professional OCD sufferer you need look no further. Its worth the journey how ever far away you are.

My car now looks and feels like new, I am a happy man.

wow that is beautiful!

What kind of warranty issues did you have with the new engine? Do you know when that engine was built? Curious how long it's been sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

Dan,

Fantastic to see your car in all it's glory and that you have it back to enjoy! Must be torture doing the running-in miles, essential though they are.

Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you can finally use all the performance of that new engine but it must feel very special indeed to have what amounts to a 'new' e34 M5 to enjoy.

Best wishes and happy, safe driving

Duncan
