Not a difficult job , unless the 10mm retaining bolt is rusted to buggery , but well worth doing occassionally especially as so many E34 M5s seem to have extremely old filters on them .
The fuel filter can be found on the driver's side of the car ( RHD ) just behind the half shaft .
The only tools required are a 10mm socket and a flat head screwdriver .The socket to remove the 10mm retaining bolt and the screwdriver to loosen the jubilee clips that hold the fuel pipes to each end of the fuel filter .
Have the new filter ready to put on as soon as you remove the old one and a oil tray or similar to put the old one , which will contain petrol , into . The old filter will have a rubber sleeve around it which should be slipped off the old one , onto either fuel pipe , and slipped onto the new one once it's connected up to the fuel pipes .
These filters are directional and have an arrow on them to confirm the position in which the fuel should flow once fitted i.e. From the driver's side (RHD ) to the nearside , so make sure the arrow points the same way .
The fuel pump will take a couple of seconds to fill the filter upon cranking the car over , before firing up the engine .
