Front tyre rubbing!

My 94 3.8 needed a front tyre for the mot. New P Zero fitted to match other tyres. Now the tyre sometimes rubs on the strut-same size tyre as before!! Whats that all about?

Garage reckons it has wrong wheels. 235/40/18. As far as i,m concerned its bog standard.

Have you got a rear wheel on the front (and a front on the rear...) ?
I did that before I knew they were different widths....

If somehow i had a front tyre fitted to a rear wheel would that then cause the rubbing then? But then why would it not have rubbed before (maybe because the tyre had worn away enough to miss the strut!-i will check the sizes)

The rim sizes are stamped on wheels somewhere aren,t they?

I'm thinking the garage might have swapped wheels round?
Its easy to tell - the rears have more of a lip to them than the fronts - just check where you have a small lip and a big lip.....

If it is a rear wheel on the front then it will rub so check that first. Also; is the tyre only rubbing when the car is elevated on a ramp with the wheels hanging free or is it rubbing when it is settled on the ground? I once had an MOT station try to fail an E34 520 I have because when it was elevated the inside of the front tyres were rubbing; as with some Saabs, due to the suspension design of an E34 it is essential that the car is standing on the ground and has had the chance to settle for a while before checking for wheel fouling. I'm not too sure whether this is the case for an M5 as the suspension with EDC is somewhat different to a standard E34 but certainly worth considering. As for my MOT issue; following a fairly heated discussion I managed to get the tester to contact his boss who confirmed that the car had been wrongly tested and I was duly issued with a new certificate.

The tyre rubs when driving along. After some "spirited" driving the noise has decreased due to wearing the tyre away! I will check the wheels tomorrow.

245/40/18 is the standard all round. Some have fitted 265/35/18 on the rears with no problems as the rolling radius is the same or thereabouts, Quite poss the rear wheel on the front but you should easily see that.

If you look closely enough you can see the difference in the front and rear wheel lip

A snapped spring would cause the tyre to rub , although probably not on the strut ......

Where exactly is it rubbing and have you checked to confirm that you haven't got a 9j width rear on the front yet ?

As Mr Mac stated , standard width on an 18" rim is 245 .

I definitly have 245 fronts and 265 rears. Will check wheel sizes tomorrow-car is not here at the moment.Just seems really odd as only the one wheel was removed and new tyre fitted!

corrosion on the strut causing the spring plate to sag and in that way make rubbing possible??? Otherwise it would be hard for a correct size tyre/wheel to have contact with the strut as there is no joints/movable/wearing parts between the hub and strut. They are fixed together. Off course, badly worn wheel bearing could cause this also?

If I`m not mistaken, there was a post about this problem maybe 1,5-2 years ago, IŽll search a bit and see if I find it.....
