The end is nigh ...

Well folks, after 4 great years and 40000 miles in my M5 she goes at the weekend

I have a flock of cars, and as much as I love it, it needs cash spending on it that I can't bring myself to spend at the moment - it's going to someone I know and they might patch it up or alternatively make other uses of it.

A big thanks to everyone on here for help and advice over the years that was much needed - all work was done on the car by folk I know, in most cases using information from this board - it's an excellent resource.

I'll still lurk and post from time to time and I will have some parts for sale soon that are left over.

To "celebrate" her sale, my girlfriend and me covered 300 miles at HIGH SPEED through the Scottish Highlands, up Loch Lomond->Glencoe->Ballachulish->Oban->Loch Fyne->Invererary and home at the weekend for Valentines.

Aw shucks. She still goes well and gets all the knowing looks, but I am giving up on the running costs for the moment and I also am having a bit of change of direction in life, thus ditching some of the luxuries for the moment.

Don't be too sad for me - i've still got an ex-British Touring Car Honda Integra track-car and another mental Honda Integra road car .... I'll just not have my supersaloon anymore!

It's a January 1993 3.8 5-speed car, so just passed her 16th Birthday!

Now got 162K miles on the clock and tinworm everywhere sadly - due to the Scottish climate I think, it spent it's early years up here and most of it's subsequent life.

New owner is looking to maybe save her if he can sort the rust out - I'd say it's 50/50 - he's also got an E30 and I think if the rust remediation doesn't work he'll stick the engine into that

It is sad... not many of us are consumed by the sickness that is spending vast fortunes on these beasts... hopefully she's saved, hopefully you'll come back with another one later on in life, not too late mind you!

Sorry to hear your news Stephen but best wishes for everything in the future.

Being a fellow Scot with an early-ish car that has spent half it's life in Aberdeen I can sympathise that our location/weather/council road salt is particularly unkind on any car. I'm treating mine to a strip down, clean and waxoyl in the Spring to try and get another 17 years under it's belt with any luck!

Here's hoping the new keeper gets the bug too ;-)

Best wishes,
Duncan

Sad day indeed, but at least you still have some toys. Would love to see pics of those as well.

My best friend is a Scot lost in Hollywood. Goes home every summer and has been bugging me to come visit him when he does. One of these days.

Breathtaking views. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers !

Thanks guys!

It's worth re-iterating that I've no idea how I could ever have owned the car without the support of this board - if I had to rely on dealers I'd be broke and on the street .... especially Wout's massive thread on his rebuild!

I took my time considering what to do, then a long chat with Davioli helped me make my mind up - there comes a point when you have to stop spending money on something and I think I reached that point - if the rust was relatively simple to fix I would have kept it, but it's not really.

My original plan to transfer the mechanicals to Alpine Amy stalled as I realised that by swapping engine / suspension / etc. all over then I would want to renew every linkage, bush, arm, mount, etc. and it would end up costing £3K in parts and I just don't want to spend that money on it at the moment.

I'll hang around anyway to give the benefits of my experience to other owners - I learned a lot about the car - and also because it's a nice forum and I love M5s just as much, so want to keep track of how you guys are getting on - I have a good feeling I'll own another one in a couple of years ..... once I get over my Hondas and sell them I want a GT3RS (don't we all? ) and an M5 for comfort

Pics of the Hondas here if anyone is interested ....

BTCC-spec one - no bumpstops and fully rose-jointed, no use for daily driving - crazy short ratio gearbox but standard engine
Picasa Web Albums - nebpor - raceTegra

Road (i.e. track!!) spec one - this one is getting an interior put back in and less hardcore suspension, so I can use it daily - had hardcore 10,000rpm engine build but has went back to standard as the high compression just kept wrecking it ;-)

Hey Steve, good luck with Teg's, I know you love 'em. Hopefullly see you at Knockhill on some track days sometime this year.

I can fully understand how years of UK salty roads, especially Scotland, takes its toll on a car - turns things brown very quickly, even a well built BM, shame, such a great looking car At least you have other great sounding high revving naturallly aspirated crazy cars to play with!

Cheers,

Rich

Sorry to hear that you are leaving the fold, lets hope that GT3RS plan falls through soon!

Thank you for your contribution to this board, I know it helped me a great deal.

All the best!
