the video that explains it all

YouTube - BMW M3 E30 600bhp turbo vs stock M3 E46

watch this.

Not doing the E30 short, one simply cannot overcome the difference in chassis design difference to the E46.

However, this is an example.

you can interchange the E30 Turbo with :

Audi RS-whatever model
MB AMG - whatever model
any rice rocket

you can interchange the E46 with :

E30 M3
E60 M5
E34 M5
E39 M5

perhaps people with 'buddies with 7000 hp impreza's' or 'my brother in law's 9000 hp twin turbo Mustang' refrain themselves from posting in HP war threads.

Its the package that counts. And BMW do a damn good job on that package.

Hate to say this, but the car in front is just an E30 not an M3. Also just because one has 600 BHP and the other about 340 BHP the difference in power is not proportional to speed.

For instance a 1000Kg car with 500 BHP is not twice as fast as a 1000Kg car with 250 BHP.

Just my 2 pennies.

I think you are missing my point here.

I'm well aware of the E30 model range, I've seen one once.

omg, no wonder that the track in video looks familiar - Motopark Raceway in eastern part of Finland. I did appr. 40 laps there with M5 last October during BMW Club Finland track day. Definately the fastest track in Finland, 200+ km/h is possible at the end of main straight.

However I'm not sure if I got the point - E30 is fast on straights, but handles like crap compared to stock E46 M3?

I think the point is that E46 is a better package. Even with 600bhp the E30 is caught easily and would be passed as soon as it gets twisty. On a straight however the E30 is a monster!
I think Wout is trying to point out the endless quest for more power may not reap the rewards people are looking for. The package is whats important.
This IMHO is the E34 M5's ace card.

Milo, Stick around a while.

Wout's and other board luminaries' first reaction to threads about 'how do I get more power so I can go faster?' is generally -
'get the thing making stock power, get suspension and brakes in tip top condition first'................most are pleasantly suprised and the results of such 'modifications'.

He was just emphasising this in a more abstract way than usual!

And learn how to drive. I'm not too sure the e30 guy really had the guts to really drive that much horsepower or go hard through the corners.

sorry to have sounded harsh, but I didn't see you were a new member here.

My point is indeed what my esteemed board-friends pointed out. People often lose themselves in HP figures and it annoys me a lot

the E46 chassis is fantastic ofcourse, but the HP difference is ofcourse huge too. If you see the sheer speed difference in corners and bear in mind that people like Audi aren't the best chassis builders in the world..

Only one? You need to get out of the house more.

Great post. So true. There is nothing like a properly set up, well balanced car. That is why I laugh in side when some 18 year old on a 3 series forum wants to get coilovers with the stiffest springs known to man and more adjustability than an E66 seat because that's what he thinks its all about. It also gets me when people bash on the e92 M3 and say they would rather have a 335i with a few mods because it will "run circles around" an M3. People just don't realize the engineering that goes into these cars.

Cheers,

Brian
