Calypso Candice Clutch Replacement

Candice was absolutely flying on Sunday at Snetterton , until a dreaded case of clutch slip suddenly kicked in after a few hot laps .

The fact that she would pull strongly again , without clutch slip , after being allowed to cool down before beginning to slip again once hot suggested a combination of clutch wear and possible rear crank seal leakage .

Either way , the gearbox and the clutch had to come off in order to inspect the parts .

The Flywheel and Rear Crank Seal :



Old Clutch and New Replacement ( Don't new parts look sooo sexy :



The gearbox had a relatively large amount of engine oil inside upon removal , confirming that the rear main seal was leaking .

Original Rear Crank Seal :



New Rear Crank Seal Fitted :



New Clutch Fitted :



The roadtest indicated that the clutch is now performing as required , so roll on our next trackday .......possibly Bedford Autodrome next week !

how did you address the flywheel? As I understand, they can't be machined on a lathe, so...emory paper to remove glazing, or just re-use as is? I'll be doing this same job due to release bearing grind in a few months, and I figure that the flywheel should be in pretty decent shape since the clutch isn't slipping. Any suggestions re. flywheel?

Hi Rob ,

The flywheel was cleaned up with emery paper and brake disc cleaner before being refitted .

A small quantity of high temp grease should be put on the gearbox spline before refitting also .

Thanks for your time and efforts over the last few weeks, the difference in Calypso since all the new 'bits' have been fitted is immense.

Can't wait for Friday, first chance to compare Calypso's performance with my memories of FUG's.

No chance - FUG will never be sold. She is just resting this year to allow funds to be diverted into the calypso track car.

FUG will more than likely be resurrected for a few outings next year.

Hows the E39?
