Best mod ever

Just got the car back from Mr Farrell

New MAF fitted and initial reaction was OH MY GOD why didnt i get this done before??

Admittedley the price for a new MAF is ball achingly steep but hey thats BMW for you, Reckon she would pay back in economy within 6 months even with my weekend use(oddly i tend to take her during the week too!)

pulls better from 3k and even better at the magic 4k +

Now to get me a new key

Was the old MAF going bad ? I've sourced a new one myself so trying to justify the purchase.

Glad to hear of the results.

Hi Steve,

What sort of mileage were you getting before the MAF? And what sort are you now getting?

Really pleased to hear this Steve!!!

If my car's survived its recent oil leak there's a new MAF on order.

The cost is shocking to the point of guilt, but she's definitely over-fuelling at low speed (God knows what it's doing at high speed) and aside from keeping the engine in best condition I'm hoping for a decent fuel saving

I have found a shop in Boulder Colorado that overhauls the rectangular electrical style M5 MAF for around 200 USD. I just sent him mine and will report back with the results. They have developed their own wire element that is supposed to be more robust that OEM.

This could be very benificial to the M5 crowd. Even shipping from Europe and the 2 day turn around for the rebuild would be about 1/3 the price of a new one.

I should get mine back next week and will follow up.

I replaced the MAF on my 3.6 about 4 months ago at around 135k miles. The car feels much smoother and more powerful now, part throttle response has significantly improved. Fuel economy has improved but not massively (around 0.5-1.0 mpg.) All in all expensive but worth it.

I changed mine as well (3.8) at 97k miles, and noticed no change over a cleaned "error free" older MAF.
I will be testing out the two different MAF's and compare acceleration to see if any difference can be measured.
Also, I don't believe the MAF plays a big role above 4k rpms but I may be wrong...

Was there anything else taken care of during the service (plugs, injector cleaning, etc.?).
Was the battery disconnected?
Sometimes it's a combination of factors that produce results not just a single item.

Failed hot wire mass metering units when worn will give incorrect voltage input
to DME.
Typically, they will run the engine rich @ stoich leading to poor part throttle fuelling & pick up.
At WOT , the result can be dangerously the opposite with lean AFR, leading
to potential engine damage.

Cheers
