Goodbye bangle !!!!!!

Can it be true?????

BMW's Bangle bids adieu

Word out of Munich this morning is that Chris Bangle, 52, the U.S.-born, Art Center-trained designer who has shaped BMW styling since 1992, is leaving the company to pursue other design work “beyond the automotive industry,” according to a company statement.

So ends the tenure of a man who is certainly among the most controversial and derided car designers in history, a man whose name became synonymous with a kind of artsy over-reach and peculiar, consensus-of-one design vocabulary. Bangle will forever be remembered for the 2002-08 7-series (E65) trunk lid, a prominent and distracting form nicknamed the Bangle Butt (pictured right). The trunk lid, however, was as much Adrian Van Hooydonk’s work as Bangle’s. Hooydonk, 44, will succeed Bangle as BMW’s chief of global design....

It’s an open secret in the car business that after the controversies surrounding the Z4 and 7-series, Bangle was demoted up in 2003, from head of BMW brand design to the global design chief for BMW Group, overseeing but not quite leading the designs of BMW Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW brand. In recent years, the fire of flame surfacing has been put out and BMW cars exhibit a more determined and sober styling.....

Thank God for that.
It's about 5 years overdue.

Anyone that thinks that an E60 is prettier than an E39,
an E90 more attractive than an E46 coupe,
the latest 7 series better looking than an E38.......

The list is endless.

Audi stole the march on BMW the instant the E60 came out
and became the German brand with a common corporate nose
on all its vehicles...and look how successful Audi are.....

I know this isn't the popular view but I think Bangle should be given a bit more credit.

The much derided 7 series is the most successful 7 ever. Sales in the company have reached record levels.....the new M3 is on its way to outselling the E46 M3 ( no mean feat !)

Granted the cars aren't to everyones tastes but wasn't his principal brief to increase sales ?

Look around at what other manufacturers are doing....ripping Bangles design off thats what ! ( though this doesn't mean the designs are good ).

I hated the E60 until I bought one.....I also hated the design of the E39 and still dislike the front end of "that" car......but my E60 has grown on me in ways I never believed possible.....though I think the E34 is far more driver focussed. Whats up with the straight dashboards these days ? A "cockpit" angled towards the driver tells the whole story about the essence of the older cars.

I still think the E34 is the best 5 ever made.....such a handsome design......never again to be duplicated.
