Front Suspension - Proper Torque Values

Hi All -

I've searched the interweb high and low with no success and I don't own the Bentley manual for the e34 so if somebody could kindly let me know what the proper torque values are for:

- 19mm Strut to Steering Knuckle bolt
- 19mm Caliper Carrier bolt
- 12mm Strut Bearing nuts
- 22mm Bolt for the thrust arm
- Ball joint to steering knuckle torque for thrust arm
- Lug bolts - are they 74 Ft lbs?

...it would be much appreciated...

Thanks in advance -

Hi Woods,

If you're going to do this sort of work, you should really get yourself a Bentley Manual. There are a number sites on the web, probably seriously infringing copyright, where most of the Bentley Manual is available for download.

Not sure what consititutes a "steering knuckle" in a McPherson Strut ?
If you're talking about the 3 bolts that secure the steering arm to the bottom of the strut housing - 110Nm Bentley pg 310-6 use Loctite 270. They do work loose if you don't !

Front Brake Caliper to Strut Assembly - 110Nm Bentley pg 340-6
(Caliper to Carrier is 35Nm.)

Strut Bearing Nuts (Strut Assembly to body [3 nuts]) - 22Nm Bentley pg 310-3 DO NOT REUSE OLD LOCK NUTS !

Thrust Arm to Connecting Crossmember - 127Nm Bentley pg 310-10

Thrust Arm Ball Joint to Steering Arm - 93Nm Bentley pg 310-10

Lug bolt (Wheel Bolts ?) - Road Wheel to Hub - 100Nm Bentley pg 310-10

That should keep you entertained for a while.

If in doubt, there is table in the front of the Bentley Manual that provides default torque settings for nuts and bolts in these cars, when values are not specifically stated.

Reg.

Much appreciated...

For the number if times I've posted "buy a Bentley on BMW-related internet forums" - I will admit some slight embarrassment. I usually just grab torque values for similar sized bolts my E36 bentley but wanted to be 100% sure about these particular bolts for obvious reasons....

Cheers.
