As said before, the sunroof is a very heavy thing including the 'double plate' that hosts it when fully open. Its a bit of a biatch to drill out those spotwelds, but surely, the cost is GBP 0.

Also, completely strip the F and R bumper so that you just have the outer skin left. Find a way to attach that. Get rid of the shock absorbers that hold it in place now but make a simple, vulnerable replacement out of glassfibre or something. Cost GBP 30? Serious kilos to be shed there, I think some 20-30 kilos at least

As said, the sound deadening can be taken out. In my E28, it was some 11 kilos IIRC.

Glassfiber bonnet and bootlid are to be had for sub 200 quid a piece, and from what I have seen the quality is good enough for a trackcar. Will look good in flat black on a Sebring! And ofcourse, you can always keep the OEM ones . Bonnet + assembly is fairly heavy, not to mention the bootlid with locks etc. Simply put a std issue caravan light on the rear bumper for license plate illumination

Get the regular E34 replacement tank, thats plastic and weighs less

( BTW Terry & jon, I'd replace the tankstraps that hold the tank if I were you, mine failed once and they looked a lot better than those ..Especially with a full tank coming down the Karoussel, they will snap eventually. Replacement is cheap and fairly easy, just the fuel filter and SLS stuff are a bit in the way)

The holy grail for real big weighsaving lies in a lightweight exhaust IMO. The std E34 item weighs a tonne! Its near impossible to lift it high enough to fit on a hoist by a single person. Ofcourse the emissions test in UK might prohibit a complete cat-less system, but I guess some 30-40 kilo;s are to be had there aswell, ofcourse at higher cost.

Hi

I checked out the weights of the different E34 fuel tanks from BMW fans community, parts catalog, accessories catalog . Normal metal fuel tank 81L is 15,242 kg, plastic fuel tank 80L is 13,000 kg (I could not believe this one) and E34 M5 90L metal fuel tank is 15,210 kg. So not much to reduce weight with an original plastic fuel tank. Maybe aftermerket tanks are lighter. Or then use an racing fuel tank.

I have taken my rear bumper and bumper absorbers away and I´m planning to make bumper supports from aluminium. At the same time I want to take that rear bumper support away inside the bumper, but the problem is that I can´t get all the torx-head screws away. There is so little room to put any tools there. So if someone can give me an advice how to strip this?

I was surprised how much the rear bumper weights. Actually almost all the removed things has weight alot. Seats, sunroof, sound deadening, air conditioning, battery etc. Front bumper must be heavy also, so next it will be lightened with same methods.

These cars are good starting points to reduce weight, because there is almost an half ton of unnessessary weight for track use.

Regards, Janne.

has any one any idea where i could get hold of a light weight bonnet and boot and what would be the best material for the job? ive just sent off my starter motor to a company who are going to make me a light weight high torque motor they say its going to be a proto type and a first from the company same as my coilovers. aparently it ill be 50% lighter the origianl is just over 4kg and should use 50% less battery power so i can get alot smaller battery as my current one ways 23kg also then i can soure out a nice light weight alternator

I *think* someone on here was talking about fibreglass wings recently - try the "search this forum" button and have a look (i've no time or I'd do it for you ) - not sure on bonnet choices for these cars either, but you have to be careful what you but - you don't want the bonnet turning into a sharp mess of pointy bits in event of an accident!

I take it you're removing the sunroof? That was being talked about recently as well - lots of weight from high-up there.

Sounds very interesting about the alternator/battery - you should keep us updated
