Preventive maintenance

Just purchased a 1995 M5 here in the states. It has 80k miles on it. I want to give the car a thorough service & inspection. What should this procedure include. I want to do everything possible to keep this fine automobile in tip top shape. Vehicle is totally original, no mods.

Get the usual things.

I am not gonna post this again. The following applies to the 3.6 :

1) Valve clearances ( make sure to get the gasket + the three small gaskets)

2) Throttlebody synch

3) S50 chain tensioner

4) vacuum hose underneath plenum etc replacement , clean cannister under the plenum ( improves sound!)

5) replace all of the ignition parts ( rotor , distr cap)

6) check or replace plugs for Bosch Y6DC ( do this during valve clearance check)

7) Toss out any existing K&N oiled air filter

8) Check the small pipe for coolant return to be open and not blocked

9) Change the SLS fluid

10) Replace water pump and carefully inspect the hoses and replace when in doubt.

Differences 3.8 :

All of the above save for # 5 being different from 3.6 as the 3.8 has different ignition. Therefore:

1) Inspect and/or replace the ignition coils if needed

2) Inspect and/or replace the injectors ( they can fail and cannot be overhauled like 3.6)

3) Inspect and/or budget up for EDC replacement

Wout

@ Wout - please excuse my ignorance.......why can't the 3.8 injectors be overhauled like the 3.6's?? Is it a matter of Bosch vs. Lucas??

Should this go in the FAQ

To the moderators.

Given Wout's initial response, should this thread get put in the FAQ ?

Regards,

Reg.

And when that list is done, take it to Don Fields so he can give it a once over and you'll be in great shape.

I am in the process of bringing the M to Don today. I am about to call him & let him know I am coming. He will be the one executing the list of things to do.

I read some where that the rod bearings should be inspected & replaced if necessary . This M has 80k miles. Does anyone think I should add that to my list. I just want to cover everything I can. I really love this car & want to do the best I can to keep it in tip top running condition as well as looking good.
