How important is the mesh protection grid on MAF ?

Hi Guys , on returning from a disappointing Rolling Road session in Sebring Sienna today , I removed my MAF , which was identified as potentially being the problem , to discover that it was missing the mesh protection grid on the rear end nearest to the plenum .

How important is this grid and what is it's exact function ?

MAF downstream mesh.

I wondered the same on my 500E. On the Mercedes the upstream one will help with ensuring a uniform flow over the sensing elements and keep debris and fingers out. The downstream one I guess it's just fingers...

Jim.

No idea how important the rear grid is, but I would recall that the mesh size is different than in front grid - there must be a particular reason for that in an overengineered car like SW///?

D,

Not sure of its function but can tell you that FUG is running without hers, and has been for years, and nothing appears to have gone wrong.

It's most likely to protect the engine in the event a part from the MAF itself breaks and gets loose.

The maf screen on both the 3.6 & 3.8 upstream & down stream of the hot wire element are similar guage wire
but are also different diameter so screens are handed so to speak.

They function mainly to prevent damage from fingers during filter service change primarily.
The MAF element is secured in place by emission tamper proof screws with no moving parts & all
sensor wires soldered in place.
However, the downstream mesh element often breaks up over years of use.
This is not air pressure related imho, as clumsy fat fingers seem to be the cuprit.
The front screen to the air filter housing is never failed in my experience supporting the above.
Once the downstream meash screen is damaged, the wire mesh does start
to get loosened under air pressure.
There was some past discussions many many yrs ago about an engine failing
as a result of the wire mesh being consumed by the engine.
It's possible I guess with WOT & resonance flap open but never had first hand
experience of this.

I would suggest that many downstream mesh screens that are damaged are probably removed
before this has a chance to occur.
If the screen is removed & not replaced, then it's no issue.
Just be careful not to touch the fine sensor wires soldered to the MAF charge tube.
Break one & the MAF is toast & car will not run properly or at all.

Farrell

Hi JB , as suspected and often stated by myself .....Sebring Sienna was well down on power , recording a best run of 276 bhp ....33 bhp down on my other 3.6 .....yet , SS obviously still runs reasonably well .....

Even with the fuelling variations , the best run was 276 hp .

She has only ever been set up to standard specifications , is not chipped , runs a powerflow exhaust system , has recently had valve clearances adjusted and a full inspection service .

I have just fitted a new MAF and will run some injector cleaner through .

Just goes to show how little the figures actually mean.

Bearing in mind my recent dyno figure of 341, there is no way that my car had a 65bhp advantage on SS during our last trip to the Ring!! The cars were so evenly matched on the road!!
