DIY Alternator Rebuild - slightly cheeky

Hello Chaps,

This is a slightly cheeky post as it's not to do with my Alpina or an E34 M5 but I have a problem with my E30 M3 and Classic Le Mans is coming up.... Hope the Mods are OK with me posting a duplicate of my S14 post here.

My trusty M3 (240K Kms) let me down on the M25 Friday evening during rush hour with a very flat battery. No ignition warning light to warn of impending doom but I did get a minute's warning before total failure when the ABS light came on and the radio shut off. RAC sorted me out with a new battery to get me home as there was no charge from the Alternator

Turns out that the thin metal brush holder (6 weeks old) fractured so the brush wasn't anywhere near the armature. Reason for fracture is probably due to some eccentric movements of the shaft due to knackered bearings.... yes it was getting noisy but no, I didn't place enough importance on it - changed the brush pack for good measure when I fitted Poly bushes - you live and learn...

Having rung around yesterday, I couldn't locate a new Alternator and I'm off to Classic Le Mans on Thursday morning so the pressure is on.

I split the case and have been told by Cooper Banstead that I can order the bearings, so was thinking of giving it a go. Thing is, a remanufactured one from C3BMW makes more sense but will most likely take beyond Wednesday evening to arrive and they will want an unmolested exchange unit so if I do bugger things up, I'll be really shooting myself in the foot.

[Cooper can get me a BMW unit for Tuesday but for the price difference I could add 2 new tyres!]

Anyone done this before? Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Dave.
