Ultra-rare e34 M5 V8?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=250265195328

Could purely be a typo and he simply meant to put some extra keywords in the title as most people do

I particularly like the 'upwards of 300bhp' when the listing also states 282bhp

Nice.

Why -M5-badges- when it is NOT ?
E34 540/6-speed-cars are nice cars and they were available with a M-technic-kit which made them -look- as an M5 ( like the 540i/Sport for the US and the M540i for Canada) if the complete package was purchased.
-
BUT it is NOT an M5 and not even a ///M-car, also is the E34-M-technic-front-spoiler different from a M5-front-spoiler.

Karl,

Over here in the U.K. it's a frequent practice for the Chavs to spoil a perfectly-good enough E34 and load it with eBay badges.

The ///M Division were subtle enough for it to not take a lot for a backstreet boy to load on a few badly-spaced ///M Badges and presto, he's got an M5.

I've taken the opposite approach - I've taken my ///M badge off !

-- Some others whom I am familiar with have even taken a step further and gone down the '520i' badge route....

Love it.

Yes, indeed
one of the first measures on my own M5touring was to take the factory
///M-badge of the rear -before- somebody else will and for some
other reasons as well.....

The variations in the 540i LEs

Nice.

According to Charles Kinder, the US (540i M-Sport) & Canadian (///M540i) versions of the 540i LE were sold with M door sills, maybe the UK cars did too.

http://www.kindel.com/bmw/m540_info.htm

My car was built by BMW Individual, as I believe all these cars were. They even have some ///M-bits but which ///M-bits, seems to depend the country to which they were delivered.

e.g.
FRONT SPOILER/AIR DAM
Aussie cars have some dodgy front spoiler, but all the others seemed to have been built with the ///M front spoiler.
Check out (51 -> 15)
51_0639 "Front Bumper Trim, M Technic", as opposed to
51_0610 "Front Bumper Trim Panel" in the ETK. When this bumper trim is disassembled, the bottom front corners look like they have been taken to by a crazy man with hacksaw. None of the elegance in the "M Technic" diagram.

FRONT BRAKES
Aussie cars have standard 540i front discs (302mm)
US cars have the 3.6 M5 front brakes (315mm)
Canadian cars have the 3.8 M5 front brakes (345mm floaters)

WHEELS
Aussie & US cars have 17x8 front and back
Canadian cars have 18x8 front & 18x9 back

Most of the story appears here.

Strangely, no mention of the model ever being released in Europe !
I thought there were 50 made for the UK ?
What about Europe, were any released there ?

Regards,

Reg.

It's sad that no one thinks an E34 with an M5 badge is the real thing, just a pimped 520i with a hole in the exhaust. This does have the benefit of reducing the risk of unwanted attention and you can really surprise other drivers of "fast" cars when your old saloon scorches off into the middle distance.

Part of me would love to stick a 518i badge on the boot if it weren't so bloody believable! Given the bills I pay I'd still rather walk up behind my handbuilt super-saloon wearing a genuine M5 moniker for the time being. The badges are so common anyway people can hardly be arsed prising them off anymore.... Then again, if the badge does get nicked perhaps it'll suddenly be converted to a 1.8. Wonder if the insurance will too?

Just had a good look at the ad - it's a really nice looking car in its own right, but if he can post such horse-spaff he's probably b's****ed on the maintenance too.

I think I may go down this route, and totally agree on the second sentance!

I'd say that the US 540 M-Sport & Canadian M540 are E34 V8 powered M5's.

So the engine isn't the same as the one in a regular M5 (and in my case the tranny is different as well).

But the EDC Nurburgring suspension package is there. The 3.6 brakes are there. The EVO mirrors are there. The door sills, rear bumper, & side skirts are there. The front bumper is the M-Tech one, which is just a slightly different M5 bumper (M-Tech has brake cooling ducts, M5 one has the alternator cooling duct and one closed duct). The wheels are off the M5.

Having driven a US '93 M5 a good deal, my M-Sport gives up nothing to the M5 except 100+ MPH acceleration. The M-Sport accelerates quicker to 60, and the M5 has caught up around 90-100. The M-Sport handles better. M-Sport gets lot better gas mileage. The M-Sport should also keep the brakes a little cooler during track use.

I will say though that the M5 does sound a little nicer. Not that the M-Sport doesn't sound great. But they sound totally different and I do favor the sound of the M5 a bit better.

But this car in the auction is just a 540i/6 with some nasty M badges on it. It's a good bit different than an M5/M540/M-Sport.

Hi Reg

I think you may be getting confused regarding the uk LEs

they are the last 50 uk e34 M5s that were built.

3.8 straight six
6 speed box
Nurburgring suspension
Larger floating front discs

I hope this is helpfull to you

Ross
