Is my M5 running too cold?

So the problem is that on the cruising speed (>60km/h) my coolant temp gauge points like two or three minutes to 12 o'clock, even when the outside temperature being like +20 C it takes though just few stops and accelerations and the gauge will point just 12 o'clock but never when cruising for longer trips... I wouldn't be bothered at all, unless i hadn't the feeling, that fuel-economy would be better and car would run smoother (perhaps quicker too?) with coolant temp being +90C (gauge pointing at 12o'clock). Ah yes, the fan coupling has been replaced about 50000kms and the thermostat about 1500kms ago, both with original parts naturally. Could there something that would solve this problem or is this just normal for an M5 (3.8 -92)?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my confusing english

Just to clarify;

Driving normally and once warmed up, coolant needle tip is about 2mm to the left of the halfway white line.

Driving hard, coolant needle covers line and points straight up.

Driving very hard and in hot weather, coolant needle edges just fractionally over halfway mark.

Congratulations, your car is working perfectly!!

Regards

Ivan.

P.S. Start engine when cold, open coolant expansion tank lid and look inside and towards windscreen for a tiny black pipe that should be pouring a small amount of coolant in and around the tank. If you cannot see this tiny waterfall, the pipe may be blocked. I will post a pic tomorrow. A very useful preventative maintenance check, but I think your car will be fine.

Just before half way or at half way is normal

BMW's have nicely engineered temperature gauges !!!!
They sit very close to central unless engine temperature increases massively!

My gauge has nevergone beyond half way in 10 years.

Forget economy/efficiency....you do NOT want a hot running S38
as it only has basic detonation protection via fuelling.

Regards,

Alan.

ps....your English is fine

the thermostat in these cars is a 79C unit, and you're gauge function sounds normal to me.

Even with our very hot and humid climate this is exactly how my car runs.

....so you have nothing to worry about....

Cheers

nice to hear that...thanks for answers and I suppose my car is also behaving normally, when it comes to oil temperature? It climbs to 90C normally, and during harder driving little warmer.

My water temp is just a fraction to the left of the centre mark as it should be.

My oil temp, however, is always at 100 (running 10-60) is this normal?

If not, what should I check?

Note: I used to run 10-40 and it still ran at 100 C.

Thanks
