What do I need to know about swapping in a 91 Euro Steer box into my 92 e34 525iT?

So I am tightening up my steering on the 525iT and I have sourced a 91 Euro M5 steering box with only 56K miles on it. What are the things I need to consider before taking on this project? What is a fair price in the States for this?

Thanks

Eric

M5 steering boxes come in two flavours....standard or Servotronic.

Unions & pipework may well be different from a stock 525i box.

Physically the unit will probably fit, but the connections may not.

Ideally you need both on the bench to confirm...

Regards,

Alan.

The steering box was pulled out of Euro M5. Does this make it Servo or non Servo?
From reading, it appears as though the ratio drops from 16.2:1 (e34 chassis) to 15.6:1. Can anyone confirm?
Do you know the difference in turns lock-to-lock?

The M5 had the option of speed sensitive servotronic - some owners took the option, some didn't.

You'll have to look at the part number to know for sure - and I personally prefer the non servotronic version.

No need to shout.
Euro or not, the steering box of an M5 is the same for a -91 model me thinks. Always servo, there is not an M5 produced without power steering/servo.
The SERVOTRONIC was an option only on the 3,8 if I remember correctly (92 and onwards) and means that the power steering is variable in its degree of assistance depending on speed.
can`t remember the turns from lock-to-lock.
someone else?

Sakke
