I am thinking of buying a 95 Avus blue m5...it has 6 gears and all the xtras. The car is immaculate condition. the only problem is that it has 174000 on the clock. there is some history with the car but not as much as i thought
i have never bought a car with that much mileage on the clock and this would be my 1st m5.
my question is that is it worth buying it with that mileage...or 2 look out for another 1? like i said the car is immaculate only problem is the mileage. are the engines strong to carry on say another 20000 miles? would i struggle to sell it on?
The mileage won't be a problem if everything has been maintained as it should. If the shocks are original then they'll be past their best, as will all the suspension parts at that mileage.
If the history doesn't show a shed load of maintenance then it's as good as saying it's never had any.
Howevber, if it's cheap then it may be worth the risk that you'll need an engine rebuild, bodywork (i.e. rust that you can't see without taking panels & covers off), new suspension, etc. Which could cost £10k in the first 3 months.
Unless you know these cars inside out and go in there with your eyes propped open with matchsticks (i.e. wide open) then I'd suggest you get an independent specialist to have a look at it first.
Don't know where you or the car are, but there are a coupld of good specialists down south.

However given the current market and the fact that car has been for sale for quite some time when you came to move it on it may take some time.
There is a stigma attached to high mileage cars come purchase time unless they are really cheap, which is probably one of the reasons why this hasn't sold.
You could spend a few more grand and get one with half the mileage but that's no guarantee of a future sale there either. As I can testify!
DTW's car was bought for top dollar, he's spent plenty on it, it's totally original and my guess - he's taking a healthy hit at the current price. If I was a buyer it would be at the top of my list.
I'd agree with Mmm5, good advice there. David O's old LE was around the same mileage and as far as I am aware is still going strong and I'm sure there's a few around with over 200k on them.
In my opinion you should also have a look at the 3.6 in Cornwall (is that geech's car ??) as well.
That's correct re my old LE Phil .....i met up with Toby , the new owner , last month for lunch and the old girl has well over 200,000 miles on the clock running well !
I know this car didn't get the Faz seal of approval , but I still offered 4.5k on the day which was refused as the seller was well and truly sick of us and wasn't willing to deal ....I think with a decent history and only 135t miles it's still worth that sort of money and shouldn't be overlooked :

That car's been for sale for over 3 months - I considered it but felt mileage was too high for whatever the price was at the time. Think it was either short on history or too many owners as well.
Then again the car I did buy has cost me +++ already. I foresaw the problems, just thought I could rectify them relatively cheaply - I couldn't.
We need a cloned mini-Faz before safely shopping for these things...
If I had the chance now DTW's car looks the mutts.
There are numerous posts here on what to look for when buying an M5 (leaks, loose steering, shimmy, rust, etc.).
Is the car pulling hard at all rpm's?
You could run a compression test if you are worried, pull the covers off to check valve clearances as well and cams shape.
If you keep some money on the side for shocks and engine rebuild, you'll be fine most likely.
