How to adjust throttle cable

I found my throttle cable is loose, has about 1/4 inch of play.
Is this correct adjustment. There is another cable beside
throttle cable, I found if this cable is pulled, it will release
throttle, the opposive of what throttle is doing .
This cable is also loose and has 1/4 inch of play.
What's this cable for and what device is controlling it ?
Under what condition will it release throttle.
I don't have cruise control, so my guess is not that.

I tested my car, it will not cut off after 7200 rpm.
Not even 7500 rpm. In fact, it pulls so fast it hit 8000 rpm
before I can let go, very scary. I tried first/second/third gears,
all pull to 8000 rpm. Something is wrong here ?
The engine doesn't sound strained at all at 8000 rpm.
The SuperSprint exhaust makes the engine sound like
Ferrari. But I think I would rather it stop at 7200 rpm.
I verified rpm gauge is accurate.

Hi Karl.

I adjusted my throttle cable last year and left it with almost no play in it at all, with no problems. All you do is turn the knurled adjuster on the end of the throttle cable until the end of the cable can no longer be pulled away from the throttle linkage. Sounds confusing but it's pretty evident when you have a look.

The other cable sounds like the cruise cont cable, but if you havn't got cruise then I have no ideas. There are other posts concerning this cable and removing the speed limiter. Maybe these can help?

Regards Chris.

To answer your question Ivan, my late '93 3.8 is delimited, and this has been done by unclipping the second throttle cable.

The linkage is different to yours however, as the cable on your car that goes towards the front of the engine bay is not present on my car. I also have an extra metal flap with another cable that goes down the N/S of the engine to a black box. This is the disconnected cable that normally limits the speed.

My car does not have cruise control BTW, so that might explain the missing cable going to the front of the bay.

I will take some pics at the weekend.

Cheers,
Bryn.

From this, the second cable you describe is the one Bryn unplugged to disable the limiter.

See if tightening the cable adjuster as ChrisG advised sorts it out, otherwise a quick trip to a friendly Dealer/Independant should be able to sort it.

Guys, we need to post more camera pics of these bits. A picture paints a thousand words you know! I`m sure that it would make some of these posts easier to check out and reply on.

Ivan.

OK.
I adjusted throttle cable to no play and I like it much better
- less foot travel.
I also need to raise the gas pedal stop so at bottom
it does not try to go over full throttle causing unnecessary
tension and stress on throttle plate and cable.
Be warned not to over do it so as to preload throttle
cable with tension, just enought so there is almost no play.

Next is parking brake adjustment.

Ressurecting an old one here! I'm going to be looking at this tonight. I also want to check out my Parking brake as it requires serious force to hold the car still.
