I am thinking of getting an e34 M5 even after reading this message board! :-) I have just about come to terms with the fact that it may get mighty expensive if something goes wrong. So the best thing to do would be get a good car in the first place! So that's where you helpfull lot come in to play! I am based in the UK and have seen 3 cars that look interesting.
And there is also a 1990 3.6 M5 at a BMW specialist in Ilkeston, near derby http://www.sportstechltd.co.uk/
Features: 85,000 miles Manual Grey Petrol Saloon 3535 cc
4 Doors, Manual, Saloon, Petrol, 85,000 miles, Grey. ABS, Adjustable steering column/wheel, CD Multichanger, Central locking, Climate Control, Computer, Cruise control, Leather upholstery, Full Service History. Insurance Group:20, £5,995
The last car has a folder full of receipts going back to 91, with all the MOT's. It's also had it's clutch replaced in 2003.
Have any of you come across these cars in the past? I'd definately try and get an independant inspection before proceeding on any of them.
With regards to the first car you have mentioned, that's my car Mixed feelings
Based on the flurry of replies I've had in the last day and a half I have altered the price slightly, not sure if that takes it out of the equation for you.
Spec wise the car is fantastic and will certainly hold its value well.
At the last service one of the front EDC struts was replaced with a quality 2nd hand part and I also have two rear dampers from the same donor car that will go with it. It also had the water pump and viscous coupling replaced too.
Good luck with whatever you do though!

Chord, if I was in your position I would be getting in touch with Steve mac, also a member of this forum.
I would suggest that you read older posts by members on here who are selling, you can click on their name and read all the post's made by those members. this can be a useful way of getting a little history and background info on those vehicles. Check it out!

Hi chord...welcome. Ive just seen a 91 3.6 on pistonheads (just registered ) with only 39,000 miles and father and son owners only ...might be worth a look at only a little under £10,000..........buy the best you can but this does not necessarily mean the lowest milage car out there..cos remember the cars are getting old now!.....but this car begs lookin at imho ...happy hunting
All three cars look good in their own way,
My recommendation is to drive two or three...otherwise
you'll have no reference whatsover.
I bought mine a looong time ago, but I went out & drove the
most expensive car I could find, the cheapest and then the one
I most liked the look of.
Along the way you'll get an education about how they feel, whats
important regarding history/previous care and also about the owner
(although obviously not if it's a dealer)
Good Luck,
and get out there...it's a buyers' market !
Alan.
Ps, aftermarket indicators on the grey 3.6 & front wheel throwing star
is on wrong (and should originally wear turbines..)

Hi chord, if your not in too much of a hurry try to get to one of the meets so you can get a good idea of what you should be looking for - see some great cars, meet a few owners and get some sound advice.
These are wonderful cars but they can be a cruel mistress at times - get a good one to start with.
I think Steve Macs fiord grey 3.8 six speed is still for sale which is a lovely car, it might be worth sending him a PM if you are interested.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice guys. I've seen a few cars online and I'm going to try and see as many as possible before deciding. The only problem is trying to physically get to them. I also need to decide on 3.6 or 3.8 I'd like an everyday car that will be doing a fair few miles on the motorway, probably 8-10k anual mileage.
It seems that the higher the price doesn't necassarily equate to a better car. From what I've read history is essential and still no guarantee. Although I'll definately get a specialist to check out the car before buying.
The car on Pistonheads with 39k seems interesting but too much money for me, it would leave absolutely nothing in reserve for those inevitable repairs/maintenance bills that will come along. It also seems to be too close to the money you could get an e39 M5 with >80k on it.
has never been mentioned on here in recent weeks .....
It's a late 94 ( prod Oct 94 ) , First registered May 95 , 6 speed 3.8 , advertised as low as £5495 up until this week when the price has been raised again .
Farrell offers a great service , whereby he will Inspect a car fully on a potential buyer's instruction , advising what exactly is required . This is of particular importance to an E34 M5 newbie who may not be aware of the potential problem areas contained within an apparently decent looking car .
Even I , who have owned more than a few of these beauties , employed the services of young Farrell , when he arrived at my house yesterday morning at 6:50 a.m. before jumping in my E28 M5 for a drive to Chester to look at the above mentioned car , which I considered to seem too good to be true .....hence paying Darren to come along with diagnostics , jack , groovy Adidas tracksuit et al !
The dealer was very hospitable initially , allowing us to thoroughly inspect the vehicle , even providing a four post hoist for us to look underneath with ease . A fair bit of work was required to bring the car up to scratch although it was by no means totally neglected .
I decided to walk away and Darren was in total agreement , as we believe that the past 2 years haven't been entirely kind to this particular car .
I can provide more specific detail if anyone requires , although I don't wish to slate the car or the relatively genuine dealer that is attempting to sell her .
Farrell and I had fun anyway , driving the E28 M5 for over 470 miles and 8 hours , eating KFC , taking the M6 Toll Road at decent velocity and even chatting to board members via telephone randomly during the day .
I must admit to being extremely disappointed in this particular car and in not bringing a decent E34 M5 home with me though , as I don't wish to be using an E28 M5 on our forthcoming Ring trip in early April .......fingers crossed I can find a decent one before then .....Pfinucane seems to want to keep Mauritius Maria now I have moved .....bloody typical !
Good luck in your search Chord ......

If you are really serious about your pre purchase inspection you should remember to inspect the inside of the wheels for cracks....seller never mentioned this repair attempt and it wasn't in the service history
here's one that went unnoticed...three cracks and three attempted repairs...dunno if it's toast or can at least be welded and ground down smooth enough to only require one weight..
it's the spare now for sure
