Mummy my car ate my tyre!

Driving along a fastish single carraigeway when I started hearing an odd sound and then saw smoke coming from the back. The car in back flashed and I acknowledged and pulled over as soon as it was safe. Looked at the passenger side rear and it was flat. Got out my self-inflator which didn't inflate so I got out the spare and pulled the wheel off. The picture tells the story (sorry poor pi. cture, its a phone). I've seen flat tyres before but never a tyre that has been so chewed up. Glad it didn't happen somewhere like the Ring.

I've had that in the past, and it tends to happen to people with low profile tyres when they don't realise they've got a flat tyre.

Instead of the sidewall being vertical, it becomes horizontal and the rim rides on that instead - and in effect cuts through the sidewall.

On my Corrado, I got overtaken by mines as the carcass left the rim. When I stopped, the only thing protecting my wheel was the 2cm rim protector.

Is that damage on the inside only, or both sides?

If inside only, then I would suspect that as is has deflated and the tyre wall bulged out under the heavy E34 weight, it has touched and worn against the strut or exhaust. (He says, rapidly editing post after reading mmmfives better alternative explanation which he wrote whilst I was also typing...)

When you next take the wheel off, you will be able to see.

Either the paint from the strut will be gone, of you will notice a nice shiny patch on the side weld of the main rear exhaust silencer.

(Don't worry, that weld is deep and solid, you won't have damaged the exhaust.)

Regards

Ivan.

P.S. Whilst you are looking at the exhaust, it is time for every M5 owner to do their 6 monthly check that neither of the centre leather/rubber hangers have snapped and that the twin rear silencer/muffler brackets are still there and their rubber donuts are in good condition.

If centre hanger rubbers are snapped or have been bounced away by speedhumps, bear in mind there are two types, standard BMW rubber-looking ones only which work temporarily, and a reinforced leather/rubber/stitching one which the E34 M5 should be using.

You're right Ivan, I have shined up my exhaust. I can think of cheaper ways of doing it though. I suspect the wheel rim knifing the tyre is most likely though.

Happened to me once on an 18"

tire was so far gone on the inside that it ripped apart .

Recently had it on a 2-axle (thank god) trailer when I picked up the E28. Also, the complete inner side came off.

Not uncommon at all.
