Seen it racing, and up close in the paddock too. Lovely condition for a race car.

There's one on RaceCarsDirect too.

Pity the rules at the Nordscheife changed - otherwise we could have had a group buy and rented a garage over there for it.

I wonder what he's racing next year?

Stickers are cheap but to turn the average corpse on a stretcher M5 into a competitive reliable racecar isn't ......

The reports I've seen are that the NS will now require all vehicles that use it to be standard & road legal and have some sort of road-worthiness certificate to be allowed on the NS.

This means that you've got to be careful if you take a stripped out racer as they'll say it's modified and not a road car - then you have to prove it is, which means taking all your insurance, MOT, etc. documents with you.

According to chats and information from marshalls and the Nordschelif staff, reported over at www.northloop.co.uk (free registration required), there is going to be a big crackdown next year on stripped out cars and trackday racers.

Point one:
Basically there have been too many people, especially the English, buying up bangers, stripping them crudely and then going over the 'Ring and either crashing or breaking down. There is also concern over the safety and road-legality of these £100 cars given that the German TUV "MOT" equivalent is far stricter than the UK MOT test.

On a personal note, I must admit that often it is the attitude of the drivers and not the cars that causes the issues, but if I was to read between the lines, I think the Germans fear that lots of dangerous cars and possible accidents will cast the 'Ring in a poor light. This draws attention to it which is what is not wanted, as the whole idea of Touristefahrten days is already politically incorrect over there.

Point two:
The expert 'Ring drivers are now often putting in laps in the mid to low 8 minute times, which from Bridge to Gantry means a seriously fast lap. A very well driven 2 seater E46 M3 CSL like Thoirleif's car go down to 7:50 or less if memory serves. Remember these guys are JK (Year card) owners doing thousands of laps.

I know Thorleif personally is a safe driver, but there have been issues in the last year or so where some other drivers have been really going for it and have had near-misses with other cars, or have become frustrated and angry with slower vehicles "ruining" their laps.

The issue is that the 'Ring is getting busier and often these drivers are new to the track or in far slower cars. This means that can be speed disparities of up to or higher than 100mph in some areas like the Foxhole, or Kesselchen area, where other drivers either have slow cars or don't know the track.

The public days are just that, public days. Some drivers are now turning up in very expensive 400Bhp+ stripped and track-day prepared cars with super-sticky tyres and all the gubbins.

The "plans" are that these dedicated track-cars-with-license-plates may be asked not to use the 'Ring on TF days at all. It will be interesting to see what happens.

A thorny subject.

How do you "ban" a lightweight E46 for going fast, then let a factory 2008 911 GT2 RS or a Nissan GTR onto the circuit at the same time as a 7yr old factory Mondeo or Peugeot 106? Seems to be a driver problem more than a car one, but how do you sort that out?

Regards

Ivan

The problem is that the Ring is too crowded IMO.

Granted, I visit is mainly on busy days, but the typical scenario where a crash happens and some 20-50 cars varying from R500 superlights to Mondeos to GT3's and some bikes are burning their clutches on Dottinger untill the track opens again. Voila. it only takes one or two laps before another incident happens.

About the brits with bangers . I can only subscribe to this phenomenon. Many Metro's and XR3i etc can be seen on worn tires etc with some white knuckle morons still on the crack they got in Amsterdam the night before thinking its all "a laugh mate!"..

I hope the Streckensicherung gets the authority to make the rules according to the judgement of their own, and not some legislation. As Ivan said, its not possible to completely rule out these cars. Leave it to the StreckenSicherung (not abbrevating that!) guys since they know EXACTLY who causes the problems.

And, ban bikes. ( yeah yeah yeah throw it all on me..) Its madness with the current HP/weight levels. Recently I was on a brand new Suzuki and they have actually made the frame of the bike LESS stiff since the suspension doesn't cope with the bumps anymore because the bikes can be under such HUGE angles in corners. WIth the correct tires and a big heart, its virtually impossible to loose grip on a bike now whilst cornering. Its too bloody dangerous on the Ring, and its mainly foreigners (brits, italians, french etc) who probably can't drive the bike within 80% of its capabilities and CERTAINLY don't know 8% of the tracks abilities.

However, ofcourse this would rule out a major amount of fairly talented and safe bikes out there. Perhaps separate days?

Bikes and cars should be on separate days.

Bike accidents seem to be:

1. Any bike hits coolant or oil spilt often unknowingly by car.

2. Inexperience biker who doesn't know the track slams on for a blind or unknown corner and car behind hits it (eg. Pflanzgarten and the next few bends), when the car driver knows it's fast or near flat out.

3. Competant biker who doesn't know track slams on for all the unknown corners and then goes like a missile down clear sections. This means repeated contact with a car in the same area. Frustrated and angry car owner catches up starting around Hohe Acht, knowing lots of bends prevent biker accelerating away again soon. Crash occurs in car's aggressive overtake of bike often exacerbated as biker misjudges corner.

4. Biker with extensive track knowledge catches slow or inexperienced car driver so fast the driver doesn't realise he's been caught, then driver fails to see bike in blind spot and takes corner.

5. Car driver with good track knowledge and a fast car assumes he is catching everybody else and is so busy trying to go faster and faster he doesn't check mirrors as often as he should and misses biker in blind spot, not hearing them over fast car's engine.

None of these have a reliable and easy solution that will work and stay working except have all-bike days or split the day into two or four sessions.

Regards

Ivan
