Need a part #

Hey,
I'm having no luck with ordering a part from BMW for a piece that I need under the hood of my 91 M5 (production 03-90). I'm looking for the plastic shield (cover) that installs directly behind the passenger side headlights. In other words, you would have to remove this cover to change headlight bulbs. If you have this cover in place on your 91 M5, would you please take a look and post the part number for me.

Do you mean part 10 on this diagram (different numbers for left & right).

Part 10 on the diagram is correct. However, when BMW ordered the part, it is not correct. Ended up with a cover that had a hole in it for an air intake as would be on a 535. They could not reference another cover without the hole. Plus, the cover didnt fit either even with the hole in it. That's why I'm trying to find one to reference the part number.

You've got me worried now, as I've just ordered the same parts for mine - I didn't supply the numbers, I just asked for them at the BMW dealer and they showed me the screen and I pointed them out.

If they don't fit, they'll have to take them back - although I haven't looked at the broken ones I've currently got on mine for part numbers.

Good luck Mmm-Five...yours could possible be a different part being a right hand drive verses my lefty. If you can make out the part numbers on your broken covers, that could be a big help for the dealer. Let me know what happens.

Do you mean my 'old' 3.8?

If so, it's well documented on the Board. Basically I knew I needed new rear suspension, then during an Inspection I was told the fronts needed doing as well (after only 40,000 miles since they were replaced). While I was saving up the £3000 to do the suspension, I had a misfire which ended up being a bent valve - or another £2000-£3000.

I sold it as a fixer-upper and used my savings towards another - and I ended up with a 3.6 fixer-upper which had sound bodywork and a recent engine rebuild (bottom-end though as I found out later ).

Not sure how much it helps you but I recently replaced all of these covers on my '90.

There is two types of right hand cover, depending on if you have the headlight washer system - which mine does.

51712232150 is the part number for the washer equipped cars.

51712238096 if you don't.

my cover came with the big hole too, 51711946592 is the cap for it.
