I've recently bought myself an M5 Touring and I've been using it on some nice trips going moutain biking and hill walking - what a practical performance car, what can I say, brilliant, only downside is the thirst...
Anyway, today i was driving up north in Scotland and got passed by a maniac in new 3 series touring - he was giving it plenty as he overtook, and the compression of the road was such that the thing nearly bounced of the bumpstops by the looks of things as slowed in front of me before a bend. Scary! Naturally I wondered what it was, thinking perhaps a 320d that was getting driven very hard - turned out to be a new 335d, so I gave chase knowing that these things are very very capable. Anyone have any experience with these amazing machines?
The drive up through Glen Ogle was good, but I have to admit, I was surprised how quick the thing was, though the old M5 was realing him in once it was up there singing, but the grunt of that turbo diesel for overtaking can catch you napping in the M5. Great fun and all kept sensible without upsetting other road users.
I wouldn't mind the economy of the 335d... so own up, whose been thinking about getting one

I got absolutely humped at the lights in Glasgow from a 335D - you need to use every bit of the revs to keep up, but then I prefer driving that way most of the time anyway!
Never been tempted by a diesel, I think the problem is that 80% of the time they're great, but when you're on a charge you want a willing, responsive, rev-hungry N/A engine under your right foot .... I certainly do
Yeah, the normally aspirated thing is good for sure, such a big rev range in these cars though those new 3.0 twin turbo diesel engines aremeant to be very flexible. Perhaps in a few years when they aren't worth quite so much.
I think there are a few owners around in Scotland, a spring meet would be good.
i have a 330d m sport with a little box under the dash. It goes extremely well and at a steady 80 on the motorway does 50 mpg. How can you disagree with a diesel. Ps (I would not buy a diesel) was my comment for the last 20 years so imagine my surprise.

The diesel route has crossed my mind on more than one occasion, mostly due to the fact I am a diesel fitter by trade(nothing as complicated though!) My biggest argument for keeping the petrol engined e34 is that you will never ever get an oil burner to give that soundtrack! Also its the cost, anything worth having derv wise is way out of my reach plus I am very financially committed with the M5,which i couldnt possible part with.
How about runing the s38 on a petrol/diesel mix? You wouldnt notice the smoke whilst going forwards?
Seriously quick machines these 3 litre BMW's especially on the road....I would buy a diesel these days as they are refined, quiet and powerful and frugal....It makes you wonder from a speed ( and only speed ) point of view is it worth paying all the money for our M5's when you can be beaten off the lights by your next door neighbours 3 series................although I'm always checking out pistonheads for an E39 M5..............

I used to have an audi a4 2.5 diesel and they are very quick while still returning the miles to the gallon, but you will never replace that gorgeous note from a 6 or 8 pot n/a engine when you are givin it some big licks!! for economy i buy the odd right off or stolen recovered motor and smoke it around while gettin it finished saving money and sometimes earning a couple of quid into the bargain!
stevie: if you are looking for a nice e39 there is a 66k le mans blue on auto trader for fair money, its worth a look if you like caramel leather!
3) They are fantastic for all-day use, but lacks the charisma of the E34 which comes with some of its shortcomings
Sums it up in one sentence.
The new generation of diesels would undoubtably show a clean pair of heels to a Lamborghini Muira ( particularly one running the original rubber ) but which car would you rather drive over the Ring?
