Climate control heating panel

Hi there,

I've searched the forum for intructions on how to replace the lighting of the temp wheels on the climate control heating panel and I couldn't find anything.....so I decided to have it go myself.......... I'm not fully done yet I've added some pics which might be helpfull.....

First you have to remove climate control heating panel from console in the middle. To be able to do this you first have to remove the radio....if you have one......
Then on the left handside (And only on the left handside) of the heating panel, there is a lip which holds the unit in place. With a flat screwdriver you can tilt it just a little putting a little force to the backend of the whole unit at the same time...et voila it's out on one side. The other side is kept in place by a small solid ridge on the panel itself. (No movement parts..)

Remove the three connectors and you can take the panel inside for a closer look.

Remove the cover of the unit by unscrewing the 4 little torx screws on each corner and detach the fanconnector.

Then you have to remove the axles which go through the knobs and then into the potmeters on the IC. You have to do this otherwise the IC won't go out of the black housing.

Now you can gently tilts the whole IC out of the housing and you will spot the 3 bulbs (2 whites and in the middle something like an orange one).
The 2 whites are gone by me so I have to replace them with something similar.
A little soldering would be no problem as everything is easy accessible.

Nice going Willem!

Lemme guess: the bulbs will be replaced by slot-car headlights?

High bright leds!

First I have to check how much voltage is over the bulb whilst operating. Replacing it by a high bright led probalby won't go. A bulb shines light in every direction....a led basically in one. Have to sort this out. At BMW they probably say you'll have to replace the whole unit just for the

Ordered 10 bulbs with conrad...see pic

Update:

I measured the voltage over the broken bulbs and it's actually the battery voltage that is used.
The bulbs were gone exept for the middle one for he fan regulation which is by the way an orange one. The otherones are transparant.
Here a pic of the ordered bulb. I ordered 10 of them......

Nice write up,

do the temp wheels come in Farenheit? I would love to axe my Celsius ones. I would buy a whole temp IC if one's available and save the oem for posterity.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me in this search..

geoff
