As an owner of a 1990 car, I will not comment too much on prices, as I am sure that many owners will add to this post.

On a general note though, I think you will find that the cost of the car is dictated by availability, then quality, then mileage, then options like Nurburing suspension etc, then age.

British cars hold their value more than the rest of Europe, because it is an island, right hand drive, and the simple fact that only 696 ever came in officially, to cover all models from 1989-1995.
I posted a reply to someone who wanted a specific car a few weeks ago, and the maths worked out that there were only about 40 cars ever sold in UK that were the right year and spec, so he would have had to see how many were uncrashed, wait till one turned up for sale, then actually buy it, if it was the right colour he wanted !!

The UK books of price, like Glasses Guide and Parkers, generally undervalue the car against what you will have to pay to get one. This works against you, as this is the value that the insurance companies use when paying out in the event of a crash.

This is my estimate of the current price structure.

£3900-£6500 - 1989/90/91/92 3.6 cars condition dependant

£5000-£9000 - 1992/93 first 3.8s, price difference is due to condition and mileage

£8000-£15000 - 1994/95 3.8s, fully loaded, nurburing suspension, price varies to cover from low mileage concours condition to big 200,000 milers.

£15000+ Specials. I vaguely remember seeing a black limited edition being sold for £29000 with something crazy like three thousand (3000!!!!) miles on it, and another for £20000 that had everything in the options catalogue, 20000 miles, a full BMW respray and a BMW technician tied up and gagged in the boot for emergency repairs

Right hand to Left hand drive conversions??? Don`t you mean Left hand to Right hand drive???

Surely the UK Right hand drive are more expensive to buy, so to save money you would buy a cheaper German LHD and have in converted to RHD? In Germany M5 cost peanuts. Eg. www.mobile.de will sell you a 120000km 1990 3.6 with everything for £4100, but it is LHD.

You live in UAE. Thats United Arab Emirates if I recall. I thought you were RHD ?

Anyway, $900 seems VERY cheap for a conversion. I am sure that if I walked into a dealer and asked for a dashboard he would immediately think of the commission and phone his travel agent to book a holiday.
What will the labour alone be to take a 7-10 year old car (1992-1995, its nearly 2002!) apart and rebuild all the steering, brakes, electrics, pedals, dash, ventilation etc etc etc. The centre dash will be different, I think the instrument cluster does fit ($1200 saved, phew!), but the main dash is different. I would have expected another zero on the end of your $900
Any way you slice it, it would be better to get a RHD or LHD as you require rather than change it.

Add to this the aggravation of telling the insurance company about it.

mmm... am I right in believing that UAE does not require insurance, but accident claims can be settled from the responsible parties personal assets? I recall hearing that somewhere, so you drive what you like, but may have to sell your house etc if you stuff your car into the side of a Ferrari and have to pay the repairs out of your pocket.

Hope this is of some help, and good hunting.
I have had my 315bhp 3.6 since July, and I still smile at it.

If you really want LHD, and have to have it moved around the world to you anyway, why not try and see what a lovely USA Californian car would cost that doesn`t know what rain is ???

Where would the tourings fit into this? considering that around only 900 odd were built.
I am looking into purchasing an M5 touring sometime next year (growing family etc) and they tend to vary considerably, i.e ML have one for £19k, looks extremely nice but too expensive for me (plus they have a B10 Touring of the same vintage which takes my interests) but Martin at MCP has one for around £12k, which also looks very nice.

Andy

The Touring is an excellent car although you need to be careful with condition, to many in Germany they were used as an everday workhorse and many have poor bodywork / paintwork and/or interiors as a result (low mileage is also rare).

ML have always been very friendly and knowledgable about M cars (indeed I had my first M5T from them) but £19k is a lot, even for a six speeder, unless it is ultra ultra low mileage and perfect condition.

I can recommend Martin at MCP. He sourced me a late 94 Touring (six speed, floating brakes, 18" alloys etc) within a matter of weeks, inspected and imported it, all for about £14k with 85k miles on the clock. When it arrived the only minor problems were ones that he had already forewarned me about before I made the decision to buy. I had seen the same car on Mobile.de so I know that he was fair with the price, I doubt he made £500 on the deal. After it arrived he even noticed that one of the rear rims was slightly narrower than the other, was open and honest about it (I wouldn't have noticed, at least not immediately), and got me a new one FOC.

The six speeders do carry a premium but as only about 150/891 were ever made (does anyone know the exact figure?) I suppose that's understandable.

If I can be of any further help please get in contact

Cheers Ian

I am being a bit premature here, but I am setting my mind over to the next six months prior to deciding on a purchase, however I have been looking at these with more interest for the past couple of months. I think it will be either an M5/Alpina B10 Touring, or if not it will be an Alpina B3 touring. I have to way up the useage during day to day driving, and the amount of time it would be used as a family workhorse. When I decide, then I would value your experiences with yours.

This is from the excellent www.bmwe34m5.com

I`ve just cut`n`pasted it for AndyG when I notice who contributed it to the site. Our very own Raymond Woertman from this forum.

Hi Raymond

Here Goes

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.6

1988 331
1989 2339
1990 3022
1991 2033
1992 224
1993 130

Total 8079

Added to these come 265 cars which where shipped from Germany to be assembled somewhere else, the so called CKD cars.

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.8

1991 120
1992 1553
1993 643
1994 483
1995 215

Total 3014

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.8 Touring

1992 446
1993 209
1994 117
1995 119

Total 891

So the total number of build E34 ///M5's are 12249.

I also have the UK imports. From 1989 untill 1995, BMW UK sold 696 cars, all of them the limousines. And in Australia there are 45 cars sold from 1990-1992

Andy,

Isnt a B10 the 3435cc 12v 6cyl M30 engine from a 535i breathed upon by Alpina?
I thought they got it to about 280bhp with higher compression and new exhaust etc.

Was the B10 designation also used for E34 V8 cars too?

Did Alpina ever do a B10 BiTurbo in Touring form??
I thought they only made 500 in Limosine.

Boy, that would have been a fun car to drop the kids to school in !!

answers are yes, yes, & don't know in that order!!

The B10 E34 touring is the 528i bored to 3.2 by Alpina, as is the E39 version, but they also designated the B10 label to the 'recent' V8 versions as well. (just to confuse you)
I don't know/or have heard of a Bi Turbo touring, but that would be the ultimate Labrador transport!! Perhaps Raymond could elaborate for us if he's reading!!

No problems. Let me know nearer the time and if I can be of any help I will. It sounds like you've already seen and driven some M5Ts but your more than welcome to come and see or drive mine if it would help you choose.

Ivan

Thanks for the figures, I use bmwe34m5.com as well. My problem is that the six speed set up was introduced in late 1994 so I know that all the 1995s were 6 speed but only some of the 1994, hence my guess of 150 out of 891. As these are the rarest and most desirable Tourings I was looking for a figure specifically for this set-up - after all, the rarer she is, the more she's worth.

Changing tack slightly, I intend to keep this car long term and gradually return her to pristine condition (or as close as possible whilst still using her daily, no point being parked up 9 months of the year). Given this car has an almost cult status what are your opinions on it becoming an appreciating classic in a few more years ?

Have fun

I take it *****, that the cars that are stolen and sold on, are legitimatley sold on.
Are they stolen cars that have been recovered within the UAE, or are they stolen vehicles, stolen from Europe etc, and sold over there? (just curious)
