Is this a real M5? Photo inside

Hey guys,

Visiting from the E39 M5 forum. Need your opinion. My neighbor bought and E34 M5 and I was telling him what an assume classic that car is. Its got a lot of mods according to him, suspension, lighting, exhaust, I don't know what else. You don't see the cars very often so I was just accepting it but then the other day I was looking at it again and noticed the M5 badge was on the rear left. Thought that was kind of wierd. Started looking through the picture thread and no M5's with emblems on the left. So I putting this out there for you guys. Is this a fake? Can you tell from this photo? The guy could obviously afford the real thing since his other car is a 1 year old 760iL. Wondering if I should mention it to him that he might have bought a fake, or maybe he knows.

Thanks,
Jon

That usually means repaint.

you can't just assume that it's not an M5 because the sign is in the wrong place.
Look closer a
nd see if it has the M5 interior.

Hey Jon,

The rear bumper is a non 'M5' part. The exhaust doesn't match that of an E34S either. The front bumper appears to miss the front spoiler lip, but this is difficult to tell due to the angle with which this picture is taken. I see no rear head-rests, no 4-spoke airbag steering wheel that all HD93 versions (is US E34S M5) have from the factory. The front seats also appear not to be that of the sports interior.

All in all, I tend to share your doubt, but in the end it is the VIN that matters. For a US E34S this should start with WBSHD93. If the VIN starts with WBA, this is no real E34S.

I cannot imagine someone willingly buying a fake car if his other car is an upper range E65. If this is not an M5, the title should not mention this either.

I agree with Raymond's assessment, easiest way is to look at the VIN number, except that the E34 M5 will start with WBSHD9, I think DC was the E28 M5? But there are too many things wrong with that car to make me fairly certain that it is not a real M5

Yeah, I think maybe he knows and in that case I probably won't mention it to him. I think he just bought it as a fun beater. His last beater was an E30 3 series (no M3 badge) and he just sold it for $1500.

Confront him with it!

This is most likely not an M5, and if he likes going around telling people that it is just to a smart as, he deserves to get it back in his face.

No way he could have bought a fake M5 without knowing it, he must have looked at the reg. papers for the car.

Not only has the steering wheel & bumper been pointed out as not being right, but it's got turn signal repeaters in the front fenders and a narrow grill.

If US spec, that says '94 525. Side repeaters were on '94 & '95's, '94 530's & 540's are wide grill. And '95 525's are wide grill as well.

Though it does have the M5 number plate filler on it. And I've not seen enough M5 spoilers to know if thats the right one or not, but it looks like it to me.

I'd most likely guess it's just a '94 525 that's had the plate filler, spoiler, and badge added on to it.

It has a 3 spoke none airbag sport steering wheel, 89-92 mirrors, side blinkers is put on after wards, standard seats, no rear head rests, standard rear bumper, 17" Style 5, M5 filler plate, but pics is to far away to see if it has the M5 lock, what's most striking is that the M shirts lacks, can you see if it has holes from were they should sit?

The only way this can be an M5 if it was stolen and everything from it was stolen and when it was repaired they used none M5 parts.

Is the Color Granitsilber? Lachssilber wasn't offered in the US right? That's my second choice or maybe it's repainted not in the factory color?!
