Minor wrenching done, first time the OBC doesn`t have warnings on it in 6 years!!!!

        Hi!
Just completed changing the wiring looms on my rear hatch. Replaced the right side first because the window switch did not work and the wiper played up and reverse light and rear fog light didn`t work.
The same day I got this done, guess what YESSSS! the left side loom snapped, so tough time opening the hatch and left fog light and reverse light now out.
Back to my friendly local stealer(-20% friendly ) and order the left loom.
Did the work today. Here is some pics and short explanations......
took about 2,5 hours per side, the main problem being that in the repair loom there are some extra wires(as the third brakelight wires that remain dummies on the older cars) and the colours don`t always match so you have to compare the colours of the original loom at the contacts to those of the Repair item so you can tracce them to the end and connect the right ones....

Sorry, can`t post big pics with attached explanations so the pics will be thumbnails at the end.....

        1) remove the rear hatch toolbox and door card, quite an easy task when you know where the screws and plugs are, also the side moulding has to come of see pics 1-5.
there are four expanding plastic plugs under the tool tray. You have to take those out. two screws at the pull handle, both sides of the handle. Trickiest are the two screws under the lid for wiper motor. you have to be able to open the rear window for this, otherwise you have to pull out the card so that the plastic snaps at the screws.
After this there is four usual clips holding the hatch card, you just have to pull along the edge under the rear window.
Side moulding: two screws under the rubber "blobs" under the opening rear windows edge. one plastic screw on the hatch side. After removing these start from the top and detach the moulding from the top, the it has to be slightly rotated so that it unclips from the wireclips on the hatch`s side.

2)now unplug all the contacts of the old wire and pull the loom out of the hatch`s side with the rubber grommet (new one comes with the repair part)
Pull out the rubber grommet also on the cars body, where the Wiring loom enters the D-pillar and pull out the loom as long as it comes 3-4inches.
You cut the loom here, behind the rubber.
Install the new loom in the hatch and plug in the contacts, follow the old WL route to the severed end and tape the ends against each other and pull the loom from behind the rear lights down the pillar, this presents no problem as the Wiring loom is the only thing in the pillar. see PIC 6-9
wires for the rear window heater must be reused, but if thtey are bad(as mine) they are easy enough to replace with same diameter wire reusing the contacts.

        3) pic 10, really wonder what the engineers thought here (the wires just make a blid loop outside the WL, with no apparent funktion.

        4) re-cut the old loom to appropriate length (its good to have some extra wire in case you have to repair again or make a misstake) make sure to cut AFTER the wires for rear lights and on the right side also the rear screen washer wires.
        5) connect old and new WL with method best suited your skills and equippment. soldering takes a lot of time and the wires suck a lot of soldering agent, and Im not too good of a solder, so i used clips.
        6) time to remember that you forgot to disengage battery (stupid)
        7) tuck in and enjoy
        8) Everythings WORKING with no fires or smoke....

Did the same thing myself four years ago on my Touring. Takes time to do, but everything has worked perfectly ever since.

        Hi!!
Nope, but small tinkering with your car isn`t that bad, quite fun actually!!!!

Any suggestions why they have those blind loops on the wires? with yellow caps on the ends (pic 10) ????
I removed that bit on the right side with no ill effects, but let it be there for the left side(meaning that the left side harness has about 2 feet of slack....) )

        Hi Dr Sakke
The loop covers are there to protect the harness where they have been folded over.
They have been done in this manner to take out movement in the harness
& tolerance differences in the cut lengths during manufacture.

I think its a double edged sword in some respects.
What it saves in problems during manufacture, 10-15 yrs on can become a problem but only if the cap protectors are removed !

        Cheers
        Farrell
