"Far From The Madding Crowd"

I need your HELP. I am on the hunt for some "M-orabilia."

I want you to close your eyes and think back about ten years ago, when BMW first unveiled the E34 M5.

They published a full-page magazine ad which touted their 315-HP Beast as "the fastest production sedan in the world." (That statement was underlined...so definitive!)

The byline for the entire ad was the name of the Shakespeare play:

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

This ad has huge sentimental value for me cuz when I first read it as a 19-year-old, I was in love with M5's from that moment on.

If you have a copy of this ad ANYWHERE in your possession, and by that I mean you'll be cracking out 1991 issues of Car & Driver, please PM me. I will pay you handsomely!

Thanks,
Alps

Owning the 315 car, I too would like one.

I`ll settle for a high res scan.

Can anyone help?

Alpy,

I will try to look in my old mags collection. Honestly I never remembered the E34M5 ads in the US car mags. Must be very rare.

I too was looking to buy an M5 in 1990 but settled for a 535i instead.

Cheers,
Taffy

Alpywhite-
If you know the issue from 1991, you can contact Car & Driver and have them send you a copy of the entire magazine. It only costs about $10 U.S., so no big. Maybe they would give a discount if you bought the whole 1991 year volume set, in case you don't know the issue. Hope this helps.

Try eBay?

A while back I was able to pick-up an old M5 ad (the one about BMW making 'vehicles that fly, we still do', E34 M5 pictured) on eBay. I generally scour eBay for that sort of thing, and haven't seen it recently, but its a place to look.

Contacting the publisher would be an excellent idea too.

One of my favorites was a picture of two black 5 series....

one a 518i, and next to it an M5, both parked nose-out from a garage....

The add read "same stable...slightly fewer horses..."

I was 19 at the time too !!

Good luck finding your add !

Regards,

Alan Archer.
