        E34 M5 Engine problems help!!

Hey everyone ive got a 91 3.6 m5, i have had the car for 2 years and nothing major besides vacume hoses and fuel lines going bad. Everything on the car is original and nothing has been changed besides with oem parts. but the other day i was out driving cruising around 40 mph when the car started to sputer and wanted to die. I hurried up and pulled over and realised the car was idling at 500 rpms when out of gear and when i tried to rev it back up it wouldent rev over 2 grand at WOT while missing as well. I was only a mile or so from home so i tried to head back. I couldent put it in anything over 1st and it would not rev over 1800rpms or so by the time i got back home. i shut the car off and when trying to restart it, it would crank for almost 8 seconds or so before starting and still struggles to run at 400 rpms or so. i have since checked, the MAF volts wise reads fine with DMW connected and not connected. replaced all the plugs, new cap and rotor where replaced 20,000 miles ago but checked anyway for cracks or wear and everthing checks fine. checked fuel filter, it was clean as could be, fuel pressure checks out great too. i had a O2 code on when checking manually on the diagnostic aid but the check engine light never illuminated on its own. so i replaced it and the code went away but car still wont idle over 400 rpm and will not rev over 1000 rpm. i thought maybe the cat was plugged disconnected the exhaust and same thing. checked alternator for voltage reading and checks out fine. but the car just wont idle and wont rev past 1000. It backfires from time to time when trying to give it gas and misses and sometimes dies. the plugs keep getting fouled becuase of too much fuel being dispersed obviously but the engine gets hot faster than normal which makes me think its running lean but only when idling and not giving it any gas. is there anything else i should be checking. I may have missed something i have already done but please give me any advise you can spare. i know the coolant sensor needs to read correct too but what are the procedures for checking that? plase help im miss my e34

Check the fuel pump. Mine had similar problems and symptoms, though not as severe as yours, and it turned out that the fuel pump had a big crack in it. The fuel pressure measured OK, but because the fuel being fed to the injectors was actually and emulsion of fuel and air, it was well down on power and did not want to rev at all.

Other than that, it sounds like the timing is well retarded.

test crank position sensor, and if it has seen some high rpms recently it could be the shaft key has sheared on the toothh ring for the sensor.

Oh yea took the trigger wheel off just now and the key was completely sheared off. reason being the crankshaft bolt washer was cracked and the bolt was loose took it out by hand. Is this a common problem though even if the bolt haddent come loose? thanks again everyones been a great help.
