help please?

i posted this last night, but it didnt show up when i logged on today, so i will post it again (forgive me if its up twice) but im turning 16 friday, and i think the m5 would be a perfect first car (parents dont know its a beast but can you help me out by telling me about them- do they hold up well with lots of mileage on them (would it be prudent to spend 16000 on a car with 100000 miles on it?) and how much matinence would be required? ok moving on past that, what are the best upgrades to get for it (dinan chip/ cam sprocket/ exhaust?) and does anyone have experience with the stroker kit? thank you for your help and i hope i have good news next time i post

I posted my reply yesterday but somehow, it seems did not go.

What I posted yesterday was,

I’m negative your purchasing because

1) If you can afford, OK but if your parents pay for it, stop buying it. M5 will require owner to spend a lot for repairing. It will easily reach to the amount of car itself.

2) 315 HP or 340 HP is too much for those who starts driving. Your parents don’t want you to pass away, do they?

3) If you have already experienced racing stuff like cart, 2) may be OK but you will get bored. M3 fits more than M5 for this use.

4) Nobody at this message board want to loose another M5 because of the act by somebody who really doesn’t know or love M5.

Am I too severe guys?

Momo

You always have to be careful about generalising in any aspect of life but as a Paramedic I see an awful lot of dead/seriously injured RTA/MVA victims and, no matter how good younger drivers think they are, the combination of youth and high performance is a dangerous one - I would estimate about 50% of fatal accidents I have seen involve at least one driver below mid twenties.

Even youngsters who have done junior racing, karting or the like find life on the highways a different ball game - often it is judgement that is the problem, not car control.

Much as I would hate to put ayone of an M5 I would save this one for a few years time !

I'm aftraid I agree with both Ian and Momo5.
Surely it would be more beneficial to both yourself and your parents (through peace of mind if nothing else) to get a different car, and get to grips with the basics of using a car to start-with, then progress onto a 300+ odd bhp motor after that, they'll still be around, and maybe a little cheaper. But you'll be a lot wiser.
Costs of upkeep can be horrendous, and it can be easy to get out of depth regarding the costs of these repairs, let alone moddifying it.
Buy a good E30/36 325 have a good crack with something like that, then progress onto the M5. You'll appreciate it more, believe me, I've been there and it's no fun.
Good luck and have fun.

Once upon a time ....

~~ Ring Ring ~~ Ring Ring ~~Ring Ring ~~

"Hello, SuperInsurance, Karen speaking, how may I help you?"

"Hello. Er... is that SuperInsurance Ltd?"

"Yes, Karen speaking, how may I help you?"

"Hi, er.. I`d like to get a quote for car insurance please."

"Certainly Sir, name please."

"Mr I.N. Linsex"

"State and Zip Code please?"

"Kentucky 90210"

"Car and Model please?

"BMW, 5 series"

"What year was the car first registered please?"

"1995"

"Ok....1995.... please hold on for the computer....E34 5 Series Limosine. Which model or engine size please"

"M5"

"Fine, just need a few more details from you. How many years no claims bonus do you hold?"

"err... none"

"Thats no problem sir, although the excess may be higher than our normal rate. What is you date of birth please?"

"October 26, 1985"

".......... Sorry sir, 1985?

"Yes that`s right"

~ Click ~ mm !!

30 seconds later

~~ Ring Ring ~~ Ring Ring ~~Ring Ring ~~

"Hello, SuperInsurance, Karen speaking, how may I help you?"

"Hi, er... I just got cut off, something may be wrong with my phone.... My parents have got me an M5 and I`m just ringing around for a quote."

"Is this Bob?"

"Sorry?"

"Bob?"

"Who`s Bob?"

"Oh! Sorry! I thought it might my friend Bob trying to wind me up with a crank call"

"No, I`m only 16, but I have an M5. Dad got me it."

"Alright then, lets see what we can do for you. Any modifications?"

"Yes, Dinan sprocket and engine software, Dinan Exhaust"

"How much is it? Mom says she`ll help me out"

"$10,110 US Dollars"

"Whats that in decimal?"

"Sorry?"

"10,110"

"$10,110 dollars sir. Greenbacks, you know? Federal Reserve Note written at the top? In God We Trust?"

"Not 10110 in binary then?"

"No sir"

"What about payment in monthly installments then?"

"That is per month Sir."

"Cripes! I never thought it would be that much! Is there any way of reducing it?"

"Let me see" ~typing noises~ "I could do you $500"

"Superb! Even with the Dinan Mods?"

"Actually Sir, thats just FOR the Dinan Mods. The exhaust won`t be covered though?"

"I don`t understand? What do you mean `just the mods`?"

"Sir, the best I can do for a 16 year old new driver for $500 is to insure you for 4 Dinan Cam Sprockets. Get an old banana crate, bolt 4 sprockets to the side, find a steep hill and jump in. The teeth on the cogs will give you great grip in the turns, and if all your school chums want one, your should have enough Dinan points to get yourself a boot badge. Goodbye!"

Inline Sex,

I too am sixteen, and I also was thinking about getting an M5, but now I realize that it really isnt the car for us. Now I'm thinking about getting like a 92 325is, not as dangerous, but still a very fun car to drive. Can somebody tell me the difference between the 325i, 325is, 325e?

My take on younger drivers and fast cars...

I agree w/ what the others have posted, here's my take:

1)
I wanted to relate my experience (in hind sight) as a young driver. When I turned 17 I was "forced" to buy my Mom's old car (second gen Toyota Celica, 2.4l rear wheel drive). If I bought the car from my parents, they would assist me with payments, etc. That also happened to be the first year I saw (and fell in love with) the E34 M5.

At the time I certainly lusted after the faster cars my friend's got, however I am very happy with lessons I learned in that less powerful car that didn't have the same dire (and sometimes fatal) consequences my friends encountered in their faster cars.

I am an advocate of keeping younger drivers in controllable cars, get something that's fun to drive, but won't get you into trouble!

2)
I now have a 12 year old son, who is reaching the age of curiousity about driving. We play the playstation line of Gran Turismo car race games (quite realistic and fun -- if you haven't played this game, you should try it!).

When we started playing the game he immediately picked the 'fastest' cars available to him -- the corvette's, NSXs, etc. I urged him to try something more controllable, but he persisted. I even offered to drive the slowest car available! Obviously with no driving experience he sent the cars into spins that he couldn't figure out how to get out of, off the track, and into the guard rails -- all while I sped around the track in the little honda civic!

He soon learned to pick the 'slower' more controllable cars and was beating me. He's worked his way 'up' to a turbo based eclipse and usually can beat me out!

I know that this example is 'virtual reality', however I believe the same holds true in reality...

Always pick a car that equals the experience of the driver.

I'm not sure what a 325is is, probably a model for your country only, but a 325i is a 2.5 litre 3 series, can come with many options, available as a sport, SE, or touring/convertable etc,
The 325e, is the same car but with a low revving high torgue 2.7 litre economy engine and gearing, again with many options available.
Hope this is of some use

I thought the 325is was "slang" for a 325i withthe optional "sport" m-tec bodykit.

A friend has both a 325i and a 325i Cabriolet. Awesome in their E30 incarnation. Don`t forget the 323i E30. If you can find one with a good engine (no blue smoke, quiet, no oil leaks, sh) then they go for peanuts, and you work out the power/weight ratio.

This is a superb entry to BMW ownership. I once owned a E30 320i for a few months, and with the six cylinder version of the engine, was really great. When everyone else has Cavaliers, Astras, Golfs etc, you blast around in a 2 litre 6 cylinder BMW!

Nice! Again, they go for peanuts, £500 - £2000.
Find a Grandad who is selling his. It won`t be ragged. Don`t buy one from anyone under 45yrs old.

Hell, 518 E34 are unsellable, buy one, pull off badge, lots of polish, more polish, some second hand alloys from an upgrade by someone else, stick a big tailpipe thingy on it, voila! Instant street cred for £1000-2000.

No puff ? No Go?
Granted, but you can get insured under 20 yrs old and its a BMW, and if you can c r u i s e past everyone at 10mph eyeing up all your 17 yr old girl friends, and carry 4 of them around in comfort (try that in mums 12yr old civic).
You`ll get twice the fuel mileage of my M5 and as you won`t be tearing around chasing trees, you may even build up some no-claims, unlike all your mates in riced up Saxos! Purlease.

PS.
Birds don`t know a M5 from a debadged 518. They want a heater that works, and a big, comfy car. You teenagers don`t know how lucky you are.

If we had a competition to pull, who would win?

Me, Mr M5, aged 31 who hasn`t shagged a 17yr old for 4 years (errr.. bad example, but you know what I mean, hi Cherie!) roaring around in a car with no visible suspension according to my kidneys...

Or you, cruising about in a debadged 5 series with some nice juicy thick tyres, comfy as a 740, you went to school with all those luvly luvly young blonde `thangs so you`ve probably already kissed them behind the bike shed already, so the next base is easy....

and this is the killer.... How can you shag with the bloody breadbin splitting the rear seat? I mean, have you tried it?

The only possible benefit of my M5 is that it`s going to get them back to my house in record time. They`ll probably be stunned by the speed.

mmm... stunned.....17 yr blonde.....err... you could do what you want then......

Sorry, go to go out.... somewhere.... bye!
