Having bought the car 4 months ago, I picked up my E34 3.8 M5 yesterday after its fresh coat of paint. So finally, when I look in my drive, I can see the glorious broody black M5 that should have been there months ago
However, I need your sympathy because I can't drive it until next Friday when I turn 22! I had to (painfully) watch my Dad having all the fun driving it home yesterday, whilst I followed in his 4WD barge
So spare a thought for me whilst you're out basking in the M5 experience over the next seven days, cos I'll still be staring longingly out of the window just waiting for midnight next thursday.
Why cant u drive it till your 22? is there sometihng I missed? Insurance? B-Day gift? Its alright... I wish i only had to wait 7 days to drive an M5... lets just hope I dont have to wait 7 years....
The reason I'm waiting till next week is that I save £150 on insurance, but in that time I need to get it serviced and MOT'd anyway, so its not all that bad!
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have an M5 at 22 anyway, so no sympathy is needed really!
I will be spending the weekend putting all the trim back on that the paint shop have removed, so I probably wouldn't be able to drive it for a few days even if I was insured.
If anyone wants to come up to Liverpool in the meantime and show me what it can do, you're more than welcome! I've only driven it 1st gear so far!!!
If anyone in the UK is interested, there is a meet of the evo forum members (www.evo.co.uk), on the 28th, which will be more or less my maiden voyage in my M5. Just hope I don't trash it
Welcome to M5 ownership and indeed the forum. You won't meet a nicer set of helpful and responsive people. Indeed I didn't bother joining any of the clubs because I get all the answers to my questions on here.
Apart from the car your only potential problem is the police as at age 22 (same as I) they don't tend to like young people driving round in cars which they have to call the helicopter out to catch. The amount of times I've had a police escort home while they checked if the car was stolen or insured (yep that's checked in real-time now) I've lost count, but it’s reassuring if it ever was nicked.
The only time I have been stopped was by a copper on a motorbike: your usually in serious trouble if these guys pull you so it was a bit worrying to say the least. Turned out he had always fancied one and asked if he could take a quick look. As it was a Sunday and I had no prior engagments I obliged. He declined though when I propositioned him to a race which raised a smile.
Funnily enough, both times I was stopped by the police I was in my first a car, which was a 1985 316. Once was for speeding, the other for driving a BMW at 18! Still, like you say, I would rather they did that and catch anyone stealing my car than not stop people.
Its also got no badges on, so its a real street sleeper. Its just the enormously wide wheels that give it away really, but you could put them on any 5. Tempted to get a 520i badge for comedy value
I can't believe your insurance by the way - I tried Tesco, but they wouldn't a quote on line. I only have 3yrs NCD though, so I guess the difference in what we pay is that. Plus postcode differences I suppose. Don't really mind the insurance, because I got the car so cheap in the first place.
As for the website, give me a chance to put the trim back on the car, and I'll have a go at sticking up some pics.
I got nicked just 12 minutes after collecting mine by a copper in a plain vectra v6!!(laughable car) He had big problems keeping up with me, so he kindly told me. He went over the car with a fine tooth combe and found all in order, and because he was alone with no vascar unit he was forced to let me off with a producer!!!! what a looooooser....
