BMW L6?

I saw an interesting BMW L6 this past weekend while I was down in Norfolk, VA. Does anybody know anything about these cars? Was the L a forerunner to the M series?

Only alphabetically...LOL...Sorry could not resist.
No it was not a forerunner in fact the L6 came after the first M6...it was a Luxury Model 6 series...produced for only one year....not 100% sure but I believe it was made for the MY87??

I thought it was made for a year or 2. There was also an L7 at the same time.

The L7 was an extended 7-series from BMW Individual.

The L6 was a luxury version based on the 635i offered in 1987 only for the USA with an automatic transmission, leather head lining, door skins and dashboard.

L didn't mean long wheel base on that model (E23)- the long wheel base didn't appear until the E32 IIRC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_E23

Looking at autotrader, there were L7s in 86 and 87.

True - the extended L7 was only introduced with the E32 7-series in 1987... confusing model designations by BMW...

Thanks for the info, guys. It looked like a nice ride. This one had rear tires about the same size as what we have on our M5s. I figured if this was the stock tire size, the car must have been built for performance. I'm guessing the owner must have made the switch. I'll have to give the car a closer look, maybe chat with the owner next time I'm down there.
