I am tempted by a Lotus

Yesterday I was offered one of the most sought after cars in the world: A 1991 Lotus Omega, the fastest production saloon car ever!

That alone would not be worth mentionning, but the condition of the car is. It wasn't raced to *****, the engine hasn't been tampered with, it still has the original paint and it only has roughly 9000 genuine kilometers (5500 miles) on the clock! The leather still feel beautifully. The car is like new, absolutely beautiful!!!

For those who have never heard of it:

From the outside is looks like a standard Opel Omega (Vauxhall Carlton in the UK) with some - for that car - 'ricey-ish' additions like wide tyres, lowered chassis, spoilers and a Lotus badge on the hood.

Lotus took 950 Omegas and replaced everything except the body and the interior. That means six cylinders, twin turbos, 380 hp, 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 285 kph (177 mph, 301 kph/187 mph downhill at the rev limiter)! It's officially a Lotus.

Well, if it had fit into my financial planning I would have bought it on the spot. The price is an exceptional 28000 Euros only but the time for me has not yet come

It's not openly for sale so maybe I'm lucky that in a year or so the car is still there. Then the DeLorean would have to wait.

Damn...

Mike

Truly an amazing piece of engineering and an unbelievable find with that mileage.

Though I must say that the Omega must be one of the most boring cars to look at... But I've always considered Opel an old farts car. I'd buy a B10 instead

But still it is a Lotus and deserves respect.

It sure is boring but not ugly. Timelessly boring I'd say Well, let's agree on unconspicious

I wouldn't have bought the car to drive it. I would have bought it because of the low mileage only and then stored it away for another decade or even more.

I'm surprised myself that I have those thoughts - buying a car (such! a car) and not driving it. But that's maybe only because I was never interested in driving it, but fascinated by the car and its existence alone.

Hi Mike,

Let me say you have a great taste. Yes, it is a masterpiece, a really nice one. My uncle had a red Opel Omega 3000 24V and it was a fast and cool car...The Lotus Omega must be the bast ( I think it based in the omega 3000 right ? )

However I like the B10 biturbo much more. It is more discret, rarer, as fast as the Lotus omega and it is a BMW !

Mike and Jetboy,

Actually I should write this in the race stories forum, but as it does not have a BMW content, but a Lotus content, Iīll write it here.

In my college years, me and some friends visited the old DTM regularly during 1994/1996. One of my friend then drove a Calibra turbo which that time was less than one year old. My friend also let Arese (Dutch tuner) modify that car to 260hp.

In 1996, we used this car to īrace' to Hockenheim to visit the first DTM race of that season. Early sunday morning, there is hardly any traffic onthe Autobahn so we managed to do the 500km trip in little over three hours (including one pit-stop). We watched the race and at 16.00 we left home. On the autobahn to Frankfurt, we travelled at around 250km/h when suddenly a black Omega with hughe spoilers blinked his headligts. Off course we moved to the third lane to let him pass. Oh boy, was that thing fast. We where travelling at 250km/h and that Lotus Omega accelerated from us like we where standing still.

As the driver in the Lotus Omega was a German driver he did not want to risk his driverīs license when some other cars where in our way on the left lane. For my friend with a Dutch drivers license there was not much risk in Germany so we volunteered to do that The driver in the Lotus Omega understood that very well so several times, he let us pass so we could push the slower cars to the right. We drove together at high speeds for about 100km untill we had to switch to the Sauerland Autobahn (A45) while he drove in the direction of Hannover.

I still have some (S-VHS) footage of this trip with about 10mins of the Lotus Omega. When I have the time, I will digitize this and post it in the race stories section.

But in the end, I have to agree with Jetboy. A B10BT seems a much better choise.

Rgrds,

Raymond

If I had to choose between the B10 and the Omega, I'd take the Omega. Pure stealth

Raymond, please do digitize the video!

JetBoy, yes, the base car was the Omega 3000, but contrary to common belief, Lotus didn't bore the engine to 3.6 liters, they stroked it.
