Who 'built' the M635CSi

Hi!

In an article about '30 years BMW M', I read that "the M635CSi wasn't called M6 because BMW AG claimed it for themselves".

Does that mean that the 'official' manufacturer isn't BMW Motorsport but BMW AG? What about the States. It's called M6 there

Hello Mike,

Unlike the E28 ///M5, the M635CSI and the M6 where build on the regular E24/1 production line. I don't know the exact details, but I can look this up in die Grosse M-Kronik if you like.

I do know that the M635CSI type was only used in Europe. The rest of the world the M635CSI is known as ///M6.

Rgrds,

Raymond

But what is interesting is that the US M6 has a WBA VIN not a WBS as “all” other M cars... The 8 CSi included. So the M635csi 4valve called an M6 in the US does not have the WBS, but the 8 2valve with the WBS is not called an M... BMW is obviously not very consistent.

That was the info I was looking for, thanks (and I guess you meant WBA). Strange indeed.

Does anyone know about the M535i's VIN? Now I'm curious...

The M535i and the M5 where not the same car. The M535 was a M5 looking car with all the trim, but not the engine. The prefect wannabee car.

The M5 has a WBS VIN.

If I recall correctly in either a Bimmer magazine I have maybe a year or so old they talk about the BMW R80g/s motorcycle being the first "Gelande Strasse" all road BMW motorcycle which is now the R1200GS. They were comparing that to the M535 which was one of the first M's in the 5 series and was the fastest sedan out at the time. Then the M5 was born. I will find the article as I know I have it set aside and you guys can read it. It was a solid article.

It is true that the e12 M535I and e28 M5 are not the same car but both had M engines. Both are adjustments of the m88 from the M1.
